Dream a little dream of me...

Before I taught first grade, I was a fourth grade teacher for ten years.  I worked closely with an amazing teacher named Jane Brown.

Not only was Jane an incredible teacher she was just a classy, classy woman.  She and her husband, however, were never able have children of their own.  Her brother and his wife had three lovely daughters, with whom Jane was very, very close.

One summer, when these particular girls were in their teens, I had a strange dream.  I was visiting with my sister in July, and while there I dreamed of running into Jane in a local department store.  She was with two of her nieces, and I remember that in my dream I commented to her, “Jane, I thought you had three nieces.”  To which she replied, “No, just two.”

I returned home several days later, with that dream lingering in my heart, gnawing at me uneasily.

Upon my return I received a phone call from the music teacher in our building.  “Vodkamom, I wanted to call and tell you that Jane’s oldest niece was killed in a car accident last week.  I knew you’d want to know.”

Stunned, I hung up the phone.

Dreams.

They are fascinating, aren’t they? And sometimes, downright scary.

  1. Wow. That's creepy and cool. Please don't dream about me or my family.

  2. Oh my gosh VM, that is scary! And also deeply complex... dreams are so deep and I think there's so much untapped meaning in them...

  3. Dreams are usually the subconscious telling or warning us about something....but, you have to be open to receiving these messages. And it appears that you are.

I enjoy learning about this aspect of our psyche.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I have always believed that dreams had deep meanings and could be prophetic.

Creepy (and very sad) example of this.

  5. very strange, and a little scary I expect. Got an award for you over at mine :)if you're into that sort of thing

  6. I love when that happens - I tend to have dreams like this.
I know it must stop you in your tracks, but it's an awesome reminder of how we're all connected.

  7. My sister has dreams like that once in awhile.
    Premonitions.......scary.

She has to let me know if she dreams about me meeting some sexy hunk..........so I'll know to wear make up that day!

  8. (shiver) dipping into the quantam pool of events that is the shared hallucination we call reality, I see...the connectivity of things is scary and amazing, isn't it?

And VM, if you do dream about me (I know, who doesn't?)(grin), please call me the instant you wake up!

  9. I had a psychic dream once too when I was about 10 years old - no one ever believed me though. Luckily mine just about nintendo though.

  10. I am sure that is a very common name but my grandson's second grade teacher is Jane Brown. We are in Columbus, Georgia.

What a dream. You must have psychic abilities.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I first started reading this, and was going to make a "James Brown" joke about how "Jane Brown" was the hardest working woman in education.

And then her neice died, so it didn't seem appropriate anymore.

And my psychic dreams never come true.

  12. I have had two scary dreams about family members that I can remember. Luckily, neither one of those dreams came true. Still - spooky.

  14. You must be very susceptible and I'm sure it can bring both joy and sadness. I think the 6 degrees of separation is much less, in some cases anyway.

  15. My dreams are always odd and entertaining..... never do they give me any insight on life and it's happenings.. just pure entertainment thanks goodness.

  17. I got chills all over my entire body when I read that. Oh, no, never dismiss dreams. Ask me about that sometime....That was amazing.
And I am so sorry for her loss.

This just means that you are an incredibly intuitive woman with special gifts.
But we all knew that already.

  18. I have read that our dreams actually take us to other planes of existence. That they are other realities we can't physically travel to.
Which makes me have a couple thoughts:

Are some of those realities SO close that the events sometimes cross into our reality?

Do my other selves dream of this life I am actually living sometimes?

And how do I cross over into the reality where I'm married to George Clooney?

    ReplyDelete
  19. How sad for that family.

I do similar things, usually related to happier events, but it still weirds me out.

  20. You are a woman of many talents, VKMom - Not all related to drinking us under the table!

An incredible story, ma'am... Love to you! xox

  21. Scary - and how tragic!

If you dream about me, please don't tell anyone!

  22. Fabulous teacher *and* psychic ... just as well you're using your gifts for the greater good VM! x

  23. I have had some telling dreams, too. The most recent was a couple years ago when I dreamed that I was in the old barn at my grandparents' home. It got really windy, and the barn started creaking loudly. I ran out of it just as it collasped behind me. The next day I learned it really DID collapse overnight during a thunderstorm. Yeah, it was old and we all expected it to eventually cave in, but on the VERY NIGHT I dreamed of it??? Weird.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I once felt my heart stop and woke up feeling very scared. I sat up in the bed and looked around, thought, "That's weird," And went back to sleep. Later, my husband woke me up to tell me that Ernie, my sweet Persian baby, had been hit by a car down the street. He wasn't even supposed to be outside! I knew I had felt him pass. Won't forget it. So I get what you're saying. Dreams are sometimes more than dreams.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I have had a few dreams like that. Most memorable one was about a guy floating in the air and just feeling thoughts of death coming at me in all directions and then a bright white light and then I woke up. 20mins later- at 1am my mom answered the phone and it was my aunt calling to say Grandpa died within the half hour.

Dreams are weird sometimes, but interesting.

  26. I wonder if it's just an intuitive spirit? But when I hear stories like this, I tend to think, "what's the point?" I mean - if you could change something... But like I said, I think it's just some kind of super-sensitivity thing.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think our brains mostly untapped and they really have the power to interpret energy and communicate across distance.

    Or a chilling coincidence...

    ReplyDelete
  28. That is truly amazing. It's incredible that happened to you. I tend to have a high level of 'deja vu's'

So sorry she lost her niece though

    blessings

    ReplyDelete
  29. And don't you DARE dream of me. I'm too busy...

    ReplyDelete
  30. Whoa, any others??

    That is wild.

    ReplyDelete
  31. That kind of stuff scares the crap out of me.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Between this and your nephew (I think - don't be hurt if I'm wrong) watching over your daughter I think the slightly psychic thing might not be far off. My mom knew when both her parents died (via a dream) and was up getting dressed before the call ever even came both times.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Okay - that is downright freaky. And I never ever want to appear in your dreams unless it's about something utterly fabulous - you hear that??

    :-)

    Have a great week lady!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Oh man, freaky is right! You have some kind of telepathic connection! Whoah!

Very sorry for your friend's niece, though. Do you plan to share your dream at some point?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Well, that just gave me the heebie jeebies.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I dreamed about my father talking to my sister and I about being dead before he died. Two mornings later, my mother woke us up with the sad news that he was gone.

I've still hung on to the words in his conversation. It may have only been a dream - but I have no doubt that he was communicating with me. The message was flowers are for the living. And that is why I don't put flowers on his grave. Instead, I buy them for someone else (or me).

    ReplyDelete
  37. Do me a favor...don't dream about me!

  38. My dreams are mostly nonsensical, so one like yours would scare the B Jesus outta me. Have you had such dreams before?

  40. I'm glad I can't remember my dreams....

    ReplyDelete
  41. When I have dreams like that, I wake up and start making phone calls.

I'm almost never wrong, dammit. And that pisses me off.

Just thinking about it makes me feel woozy.

I'm sorry you're afflicted with the same "gift".

  42. i'm not sure why this happens, but i sure do believe it does.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Wow, that's a scary dream, actually might be more of a nightmare!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I believe there is an energy that people can pick up on. You are obviously more sensitive to this.

Sad and strange but I believe things like this happen all the time.

    ReplyDelete
  45. So frightening and so sad. I've had strange things like that happen to me before.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Can you say "Cue the Twilight Zone music?" Wow. Over from SITS. Love your blog.

  47. How awful! I can't imagine losing a child!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Oh, that gave me goosebumps. Crazy.

    ReplyDelete
  49. aaaa... thanks for the goosebumps and nauseous feeling in my stomach. this stuff freaks me out!!! happy sits day:)

  50. That must have been an amazing and scary experience.

  51. Happy SITS Day!
Maybe you are a vodka-induced psychic? Love your blog!

    ReplyDelete
  52. That is freaky. I've had similar type experiences with my dreams.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Wow, that story makes me happy that I don't ever remember my dreams! Weird!

    ReplyDelete
  54. I have never had scary dream like that. Wow!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Yes, they are fascinating! Usually when I have one, it's a nightmare. And then I have to tell myself that they don't often mean what they think we do.
You had a premonition in your dream. Stranger things have happened. I don't know about you, but I would have been analyzing every dream I had after that doozy!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Wow, I have premonitions all the time as do the dead speak to me in my dreams. I thank God daily for my gift.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Sometimes I think that dreams are like intuition. When I was a teen, i had a dream that my best friend's house was on fire. It was so spooky that I actually went and woke up my mom like I did when I was little. the next day, we found out that my friend's house had in fact, burned the night before. Soooooo freaky!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Wow. Inexplicable. That would've rattled me.

    ReplyDelete
  59. That's really freaky - and makes me nervous about some of the dreams I've been having lately!

    Happy SITS Day! :)

    ReplyDelete
  60. I've had this happen to me before, but never with something so important.

    ReplyDelete
  61. What's up with FreeFun's reply? Ouch!
Been following you, VodkaMom... and congrats today! This is an EERY post, girl!

    ReplyDelete
  62. That's so freaky! I have goosebumps.

    ReplyDelete
  63. That gave me chills! Has it ever happened to you any other times?

I can't specifically remember a time I've had a dream like that, but I'm convinced that deja vu comes from something I've dreamed and don't consciously remember.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I remember all of my dreams and I haven't ever had one come true like that before..Spooky, was that the only time that happened to you?

    ReplyDelete
  65. Dreams can be a bit unnerving at times. My oldest daughter has these types of dreams quite often & since they started when she was 17 (she's 20 now), they really freak her out, especially if it's about someone dying.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I've learned to be sensitive to my dreams, while not overreacting or reading too much into them. I'm sure that one has made you do the same.

    ~Liz

    ReplyDelete
  67. You know, I don't find that strange at all. I was raised to embrace that kind of "thing." :)

We only use like, what, 5% of our brain? Imagine the possibilities if we used more... I think, especially in a dream state, occassionally our brains use 6 or 7% and we have a little peek into things that we didn't know were possible.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Wow ~ that had to be a little unnerving. Was this something that had happened before, or again? Stopping by from SITS ~ congrats on finally getting your day!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Oh. Uck. So sad for your teacher friend. What a horrible loss. You are correct - dreams can be scary indicators.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Oh that was just creepy. I'm so sorry for her loss and I can't imagine what this was actually like to experience.

    Stopping by from SITS.

    ReplyDelete
  71. So far it hasn't been so, but everytime I have a scary dream I wake up terrified that I'm a prophet.

How sad to hear of her loss.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Stopping by from SITS. Love your blog, following you now. Wow that dream is just freaky, but I have had similar things happen. Makes me wonder about all my dreams.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Stopping by from SITS. So very awful. A child should never die before a parent. And how weird that you had that dream!

    ReplyDelete
  74. Gosh. That just gives me chills. I do believe in dreams and especially women's psychic abilities when it comes to children.

When one of my daughters was small, I dreamt she was in a fire. I woke up to her crying and she had an incredibly high fever.

    Really something. Thanks for sharing.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Scary! I think I'd be afraid to go to sleep after that.

    ReplyDelete
  76. That gives me goosebumps...very scary to have a dream like that!

    ReplyDelete
  77. Dreams can be so freaky. I have dreams like that a lot. I had a dream about my son having a seizure the night before he had his second seizure. This is before he was diagnosed with epilepsy. It's spooky.

I just recently had a dream that my BFF lost her baby (she's only 9 weeks along) and I refuse to share that with her until the baby is born.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Yikes.

Scariest dream I ever had: I dreamed my daughter who was 5 at the time was stabbing me.

    I know, creepy.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I am a true believer in the validity of dreams sometimes. I believe that some dreams are really predictions of the future.

Too bad this was such a sad situation though.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I have always found things like that eerie. That will forever stick with you, I am sure.

    ReplyDelete
  81. whoa....oh man. See, things like this disturb me..I have crazy, but realistic dreams constantly. That'd be fine, except I remember them in vivid detail each day. I'm so sorry that happened, and how crazy to have dreamt about it like that. This just makes me want to hug you, for no reason that I can pinpoint.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Stopping by from SITS. Yes dreams are ... spooky. I have had many cases like yours! Scares the crap out of me

    ReplyDelete
  83. dreams are mysterious aren't they. I recently had one about my dad and it turned out to be partly true. Sometimes I get these a lot and want to go back to sleep to change them.

    Stopping by from SITS

    ReplyDelete
  84. Wow. Absolutely eerie. People are incredibly intuitive, whether we know it or not! How incredibly sad about her niece.

    -Robin

    ReplyDelete
  85. whoa, that's intense. i've had dreams that have been little insights into the real world. very helpful oftentimes. this one sounds pretty sad/creepy though. thanks for sharing! def sent shivers down my spine!

    ReplyDelete
  86. Wow. I'm so sorry for your friend's loss. Stopping by from SITS.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Hi! Just stopping by from SITS.

That was pretty intense! Sounds like you're pretty in tune with your instincts.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Wow, that's scary. I've been listening to my dreams for years. Sometimes they are literal, sometimes they are metaphoric... but always right on.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Oh my gosh how devastating for them! Please don't ever dream about my family mkay?

    ReplyDelete
  90. I have goosebumps too! I have had some dreams that have told me things that I wouldn't ordinarily know. I think that it is God's way of sometimes giving us some information that we need.

I am so sorry for your friend! I have four nieces and each one is like a daughter to me. I can't imagine!

    ReplyDelete
  91. Oh I do not like these types of dreams. I have been there done that and was haunted until it was over. . .

    ReplyDelete
  92. That is really scary..I believe in deja vu and our dreams...interesting story thanks for sharing.

    ReplyDelete
  93. That is scary but I do believe very much in dreams, deja vu, and a intuition. The mind is a powerful thing.

    ReplyDelete
  94. We really are all connected. Remember in the movie Avatar, how the native people blend with the beings and beasts of their planet. We do that too. We're not as aware or as open. It's magic that you had a premonition given to you through a dream. Very special, indeed. One of God's chosen.

    ReplyDelete
  95. That is scary and sad. A blogger friend of mine had a scary story also, where her older son knew she was pregnant long before she found out. He told her the baby was in her tummy and then 9 months later...

Come on people, make me laugh. I dare ya.
