Someone to watch over her....

Some of you might remember the story of the night my sister and her husband lost their 16-year-old son Robbie. (I can’t believe it’s been two years.) It’s one of those defining moments in our lives, and we continue to pray for her family every single day. (They're putting one foot in front of the other, by the way…)

It was not long after the accident, perhaps four or five months, and I was particularly nervous about Bitchy driving here and there. I knew I had to let her, but our hearts were still aching with loss.

Then one night I had a dream. Bitchy was getting into a car with Robbie, and I was in the background yelling, “No, NO, NO – you CAN’T ride with him!!” I was frantic and screaming.

Robbie turned, and gave me a piercing, PIERCING look in the eye, seemed to float toward me and said softly,

“Don’t worry. I will never let anything happen to her.”  And with a smile, they drove away.

I sat BOLT upright in bed. At that moment, I knew that my sister’s dear boy would be wrapping his arms around her and keeping her safe.

Now where is that M. Night Shyamalan? We still need to chat.

  7. Oh wow. What a wonderful dream. My daughter (almost 17) has been riding in the cars of friends lately, and it is on the increase. I am constantly on tenderhooks while she is gone. She herself does not drive.

What I would give for assurance like that. Beautiful.

  13. I got chills reading this. And from personal experience, I absolutely believe he is watching over her.

My heart goes out to your family during this time of rememberance. Em

  14. I agree with the majority of your commentors who believe Robbie is an angle, looking over your family, especially Bitchy.

As blue ridge gal said, a defining dream.

  15. What a horrific tragedy for any family to have to endure. Your dream gave me goosebumps, but I'm glad you have such a lovely angel to watch over your daughter.

  16. How heartbreaking to lose someone so very young.
He is watching over her, I truly believe.
My dad is watching over my grandaughter. She dreams of him playing ball, dolls, games etc. with her. She can describe him perfectly (calls her "honey girl" like he did my daughter), and she never met him.... he passed away before she was even born.
    Angels? Yes.

  17. I lost a young cousin a number of years ago in a freak accident at an amusement park. A patron walking by a fountain put out his hand to splash the water and the next minute he was floating face down. A friend, seeing his buddy drowning, dove in to save him. My 19-year-old cousin, who worked security for the park, then jumped in to rescue both of them.

It turned out the motor in the fountain had shorted out and electrified the water. Darrell and the first victim both died; the second guy, for reasons only the universe understands, was okay.

Losing kids at that age, when they're right on the cusp of adulthood, when your long years of investment are about to reap their reward, is a terrible thing. It goes against the natural order that says parents will die first.

What a gift to know that someone from beyond this plane is watching over your daughter.

  19. Beautiful post. So sorry for you and your family's loss. I too lost my 16 year-old nephew to a car wreck. Less than 20 minutes after he got into his birthday present-- a new car.

  25. Your post was very meaningful to me.
I lost my brother in a train accident when he was 11 and I was 9I know that he is watching over all of his family down here. I feel his warmth around me all the time.
In 1994 my middle son hung between life and death after a skateboard accident. He had such severe swelling tohis brain . The Dr's had done all that was medically possible and they all but said that it was up to God .
The nurse noticed a visitor to my son'sbed and asked us the next morning if we might know of anyone visiting in the middle of the night? We never knew who that figure was...or did me?
Deep down I just know that the figure was one of his angels...maybe even my brother.
    M. Night....you were right all the time!

  28. I believe if we take the time to listen to our dreams and also those crazy ass voices in our heads, we will all live our days just a tad less stressed! Take care...Sue

One of my faithful readers sent me here and said I need to hang out with Vodka Mom.

With a name like that, how the hell could I resist?

    Off to read!

  37. Shudder! Scary and very sad. Sorry for your loss.

  38. Would have checked in sooner, but it sounded by the last posting I read, you were going off the air for a while.. I read a few posts just now, and I think you have found funny ain't an everyday event. You are, and will be a better writer for that..you have shown me finally, you can write very well, no matter what the subject.. I admire you for that-you show your depth of conveying
life, and all it's twists and turns, with the written word. Nicely done, even if it is hard sometimes..

  39. I can't even imagine losing a child. Or a niece or nephew, for that matter.
It's not the way things are supposed to be.

I truely believe in Guardian Angels though, talk to my mom and husband all the time. They send help my way, I'm sure of it.

On a different note, for those of us who went to a catholic grade school, remember when you first learned about guardian angels? And for about a month after, did all of you make room for them on your chair when you sat down?

I think Bitchy is making room for hers.

  40. Thanks so much for sharing this story! What a wonder comfort to know your child has an angel looking out for her:)

  41. Okay, first let me say that I thought you were going away for good and that made me feel sad. Today I clicked over and here you are. I wondered about your blog and work and how the two could coexist, assuming the latter knew about the former. So glad you're back. I love how you express yourself.

Your life has given you more than enough material for a screenplay. Now, just sit down and write it out. :)

  46. So sorry for your family's loss. But it's very reassuring to know that she has a guardian angel.

    We all do.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I'm a long time believer. Mom, Dad, Robbie and lots of other loved ones are watching over us.

We just have to open up and pay attention. They do communicate sometimes - we just have to figure out that it's them!

Example: I was crying over the loss of my Dad one evening recently (he's been gone since 1975). I turned on the TV and the first thing I see is an old friend of his talking about the 'good old days' and telling some of their funny adventures!

Why did I turn on the TV? Why was that show on? I had no idea it had even been made. THAT was my Dad letting me know to stop crying and to remember the fun stuff!

This is only about the millionth time this has happened with various relatives and friends.

Wish they'd give me the winning lottery numbers!!!

Smile - it's a beautiful world if you look at it from the right perspective!

  48. Oh, what a chilling dream. Reassuring yet also chillingly eerie.

So very sorry for your sister and BIL and their loss. It's a terrible thing. My former boss just lost her 26 year old son last week - healthy young man died in his sleep, cause unknown.

So hard for a mother to lose a child.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Wow, chills. He's still there, too, isn't he?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Wow, I have goose bumps! I love that!

  51. Hairs just raised up on the back of my neck. Your girls are lucky to have their very own guardian angel.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I truly believe in this! I constantly dream of my dead parents and even though they don't know my kids I do feel that somehow they are watching over them. I remember losing my favorite cousin to cystic fibrosis and getting the call. We were the same age and had so much fun growing up, no matter what age, when someone passes it is so difficult for those that have been left behind.

    ReplyDelete
  53. wow, what a powerful dream. comforting too. My boys are 7 and 4 and I am already dreading the day they start driving.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Oof - dreams. (Hug). Do writers get it worse? Remember someone you loved, when you wake they're not there? Premonitions? Bah. I like the ones where you're the female Hugh Hef with pool boys bringing you quills loaded with ink ...

    ReplyDelete
  55. I know they visit us in our dreams.

It's comforting, and terribly unnerving at the same time, isn't it? It's robbery and the greatest gift all at once. It's hooror and joy because It's life and death together.

Clearly, he has her back, so I guess you should just say thank you and press on.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I am glad your dream brought you peace...and I will keep your family's healing in my prayers.
