There ARE good manners in field hockey

Dear Sassy,

Yes, I was a blubbering mess on the night that your team played a brilliant field hockey game against one of your arch rivals. And, when YOU scored the winning goal in overtime? I never knew my heart could burst with pride.

However, I was wrong. A few days later your team put forth a valiant effort against one of the best teams in the area. They shot goal after goal, and played an amazing, very physical game.

You and your team never gave up. You fought with integrity and dignity and even though it was a bloody, frustrating battle - you rallied your team play after play. You all played with all your might even until the last buzzer sounded.

And then, when you limped off the field beaten and battered, you held your head high and showed the underclassman what sportsmanship was all about.

THAT was my proudest moment.

and now I am blubbering again. dang it.

I know just how you feel.

My son crushed a line drive into left field but it was caught by a kid easily half his size when he dove for it.

It was the third out for my sons team and while he was rounding third base he stopped and told the kid that caught the ball that it was an awesome catch.

I was so proud. :)

There is never any shame in losing to a better team, as long as you played with all your heart.

That's what I tell the girls I coach in softball. That's what sportsmanship is all about.

Winning is fun, but losing with grace and dignity, and the knowledge that you gave it your all? Priceless.

"showed the underclassman what sportsmanship was all about."

I'm not sure how you do it in girl's field hockey, but in boy's football this is accomplished by whipping someone's bare ass with a wet towel in the shower.

Nice job Sassy! There are a lot of great things to learn from playing sports, lessons I keep to this day. It takes the right environment and a coach who gets it though, and it sounds like sassy has both.

Good Sportsmanship is very cool. When my son was in 8th grade football their team always stood until they found out an injured player was okay--even if he was on the other team. They always shook hands, and never got nasty. I was so proud--especially since football can often be lacking in good sportsmanship.

I'd be blubbering too:)

Very cool! I played sports all through my youth and I was a sore, sore, sore loser. I needed a little sassy in me! (But, I don't mean that as pervy as it now sounds after I typed it).

Don't you know it's just so awesome that after all the teenage trials and tribulations they suddenly rise to some difficult occasion with real strength of character, and you have to stand back and say, I thought she wasn't getting it. But she was. Congrats, mama.

It's rare to see good coaching which leads to a player's proper behavior on the field. Your daughter and her coaches are to be commended.
