Who knew it could be healthy?

In the last 72 days I have lost 12 pounds.

My original intent, back in the throes of winter malcontent, uncertainty and depression, was to shed approximately 215 pounds in one painful, fell swoop.

It's funny how God watches you walk intently and confidently down one path only to reach down, pluck you up -twist you in another direction and set you back down. (He must have quite the sense of humor - of that I am convinced.)

As the course of my intended walk changed, and my love convinced me that the marriage we've been committed to for 21 years was worth fighting for, I felt the need to perhaps give up a few other things that might help in this journey of ours.

I decided to give up holding things in, to talk more about what I was thinking when I was thinking it.

I gave up late night snacking.

I gave up trying to be a single parent, and convinced Tightwad that we needed to share that honor. (Why should I be the only one having so much (@(#& fun?? )

I gave up diet pepsi.

Oh, and I gave up one more tiny thing.

vodka.

  4. << Oh, and I gave up one more tiny thing.

    vodka. >>

    That'll do it !
And along with the bloat and unpleasant side effects, comes clearer thinking and a better body.

My husband drinks wine.. not too much, but if he wants to lose bloat/weight .. no wine. It works fast too !

On all sorts of levels I am happy for you.
muchas besos ... toasting you with My favorite drink,
    agua con gas :)

  5. Good for you!!! That's awesome! I just read an article in Prevention Magazine that said alcohol can slow your metabolism up to 70%!! That's enough for me to limit my cocktail hour to weekends only.

  6. If you want to lose another 5 lbs fairly quickly, give up dairy food. It adds a little layer of bloat to our bodies and we look less hideous without it. Also? You get tons of energy when you give it up.

However? IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO DO. I can last about 4 days. People tell me to give up sugar. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. People suck.

  7. Alcohol can really pack on the pounds. Really.

  13. Girlfriend, know that you aren't doing this alone! In February, I decided that Lurch's health was not going to improve unless we gave up our favorite beverage...bourbon. Sigh. The things we do to save our husbands!

  14. It seems so easy, right? I keep thinking that my occasional wine and even less frequent bourbon need to go too but it's not easy.

I tried the Extreme Fat Smash diet and all I could think about was Laughing Cow creamy swiss and crackers. All day. Just like a 19 year old guy thinks of sex 300 times a day or whatever, that was me with the cheese and crackers.

Without knowing you, I'm so happy for you and your accomplishments. Keep going!

  15. I am so happy for you, and so proud of you. I know it has not been easy. But I've been here, quietly cheering you on. Hugs.

  16. Way to go, NoVodkaMom! I keep trying to give things up, but my OCD personality just keeps finding new ones. I have about 60 pounds to lose... perhaps it's time to lay off the Dr Pepper and wine?

  18. Go you! The right things to have lost and found I think ;) Vodka can make a guest appearance I think every now and then? A Friday night reward perhaps?

  24. Wow.

Just think what would happen if I'd give up my weekend CHILLED beer. Oh, I can't even think about it.

Good for you, though, very very good.

  25. I'm OK about the vodka. But the diet pepsi???

    I don't know.

  26. If only I could find a way to give up salt and chocolate...I could be like skinny!

  27. 15 years ago I gave up soda all together. People thought I had gone on some kind of crazy crash diet. I hadn't. I lost over 30 pounds. Changed nothing else. I did it for me.
Today I don't even crave the stuff. Good luck to you in your quest!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Awesome! I'll love you if even if you change your name to Tap Water Mom. I gave up Diet Pepsi, too. Huge. xo

  29. Some days, I want it back. But more often than not, I don't. Hang in there.

  30. Cheese? oh, now that is just crazy talk !

When we moved to Buenos Aires, I quit eating .. are you ready ? Mayonnaise.
The mayo here is not so tasty ( to me) .. so between that and the lack of bagels and a few other totally "back home" fattening goodies, I lost weight fast .. but I still eat cheese.

  31. I hope that many blessings follow you on your journey WITH Tightwad. :-) I love -love - love to hear stories of grownups with perseverance! It is what we preach to our kids... it sure as heck isn't easy to model... but we continue to grow. It is the brightest of days that actually worry me the most because I know that we must carry our share of burdens too. When you are in the deep dark trenches, you know you get to look up to the future. Good luck with giving up things too. I could do the Vodka easier than the caffeine.

  32. Where's the ^%$#&* DIET VODKA when you need it, right???

I'm still laughing at you writing 215lbs :))))

    ReplyDelete
  33. 215 lbs, huh?
I wanted to leave my husband in '94, but he hung on for dear life (thank God!), and after i "got over myself", we became sooo much stronger for it. It *can* be worth fighting for VM. And the truly good things are typically better once they've been forged by the fire.

And anyone can live without vodka. You need to find something better. A rose is a rose by any other name. Find your new "vodka"!
    =-)

    ReplyDelete
  34. I'm still calling you VM. I'm so happy for you! Congrats on all of the above - NONE of it easy.

We keep saying we are going to give up the wine. I know we need to, but damn it's hard. Really proud of you!

    ReplyDelete
  35. so you're keeping the extra 215 huh? good for you. sometimes the devil you know is better. i've been through a very necessary divorce (do NOT regret that one at all!) but i've seen people split who shouldn't have. maybe you're one of those couples. good luck to you :)

and maybe if you start giving HIM the vodka he will be more tolerable. or at least think you are ;)

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'm working through issues with my extra 160 lbs(gag!)...it's so incredibly hard! Kudos to you for sharing your victories with all of us! It can be a very lonely thing to go through!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Good luck, I hope you can hang in there.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Good for you in making those changes - like you said, they all add up to major weight loss. The soda alone will do that. And I commend you for giving up the vodka. I'm not quite brave enought to give up my wine yet but I'm getting there.

    Congrats!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Say it ain't true!!!! What do we call you now?
Diet Pepsi Mom? Water Mom? This is ruining my day!
Congrats on the other stuff, tho.

  40. Way to go! I am sitting here eating a Milky Way.

  41. Since you are my inspiration in all things writerly and humorly, does that mean you must inspire my alcoholically, too?

Does my wine have to go?

    Dammit.

    Also, congrats. Proud of you.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Soooo, what are we supposed to call you now then? Water Mom? Juice Box Mom? Help me out here....

    AND CONGRATULATIONS!!!! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  43. Love you. Hope you are feeling healthy and strong and centered. Hope when you're afraid, you have people there for you to hold you. I'm here!!

  44. Ultimately, love is a decision. Congrats on your decision to try to put each other first and the distraction and defenses second.

Thought I'd share this...there is help and hurts can be healed.

  45. Great job! And, I agree at how amazing it can be when you give up things to God and how HE comes through!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Congratulations to you!! Yay! I've been working hard on my weight too. I've lost 14, but I gained 5 in a pre-diet bender so I'm not sure all 14 really "count." I've given up alcohol for the time being also. * Sigh * I would like to lose a lot more, but I'm trying to take a deep breath and concentrate on one pound at a time. Damn, it's hard to lose weight once you get to the age of .... twenty four.
