He's a rookie. He's GOOD, I'l give him that, but a rookie nonetheless.


Today on the way to lunch Frank was telling all the children that he had a gun.


I heard him clear as a bell.


As the kindergartners began to get their trays, I walked to the end of the line to have a little chat with our friend. (Unfortunately, he has earned the permanent job of “caboose.”) I think he knew what was coming.


“I am five years old and I DO have a gun. A real one!” he said in his loud, gravelly voice.


I leaned in as close as I could, but my hands on his shoulders and said, “Well, I’m …..older than that….. and I have a cell phone and I am calling the POLICE, if I ever, ever, ever, ever hear you say that again. Do. You. Understand?”


He nodded.

That’s the first time I’ve rendered HIM speechless in 36 days.


You know what I got as he ran out the door for the bus? A hug and a smile and a PROMISE that he was coming back tomorrow.

    I guess even in kindergarten you have to take that stuff kind of seriously nowadays.

    When high school kids say that, we just lock them in the Principal's office until the police get there.

    The kid was definitely screaming for some boundaries...glad you could oblige.

    I'm just as happy that's as serious as you did take it. I know some places where just saying that - kidding or not - would get him expelled, even as a kindergartner.

    yeah, at my school he would have been suspended for 3 days. Even for just mentioning he had one.

    Ok, I am crying! I heard things like that for over 18 years. K-8, boys and girls. They try to shock everyone. The problem is the stories have to get bigger and badder in order to shock... Kids have become unshockable. Society has become unshockable.

    Frank seems like he craves some attention. I wonder what his home life is like. I'm glad he is returning.

    That reminded me of that kid who was expelled from school for bringing a plastic toy gun to school. What a mess! I hope that Frank got straightened out! I'd hate to see a kiddo who obviously was looking for attention get punished for it. Luckily he has a fabulous teacher like you :)

    I love Frank I had a Frank once oh gosh, he actually didn't last very long in our classroom but he lasted long enough.
