These are just one or two of my good friends.

Frank's Present.

Frank came barreling into school today, and when he saw me he smiled. Sure, this is what he does every morning, but this one was a bit devious. Surprise.

"Mrs. Smythe! Guess what you got! Guess!!" he yelled with enthusiasm.

"Hmm. Could it be a sabbatical?" I replied. With NO sarcasm whatsoever.

"WHAT? NO! Guess, guess what you got in my backpack! Just close your eyes. CLOSE EM."

Honestly, I wasn't sure what it could be. The kids have been bringing little Christmas gifts in the past few days, and I wasn't sure what it could be. Roadkill? A pistol, perhaps??

Well, in a bold move on my part I closed my eyes. And then he thrust a baggie in my hands.

I opened my eyes.

Box Tops. BOX TOPS!! Hundreds and hundreds of box tops. (Yes. we counted. 523.)

And you know what? It might be the best present I've ever received.

(A Fancy Nancy Giveaway? Tomorrow. It's INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!)

I just really, really like that Frank. Well, I don't want him in my home, my car or around my child, but I still really, really like him.

I think it may be possible that Frank has redeemed himself for the rest of the year.
(His parents must have known for a LONG time what you would be getting so they started collecting when he was still in diapers.)

Just to be on the safe side, you might want to consider calling Frank's mom to make sure that a little "somebody" didn't make off with her stash of boxtops! Ya know, just in case, he forgot to ask if he could give them away. It's the kind of thing he might do. :)

Thats a lot of boxtops...but, what do u do with them? Does recycling only take the rest of the box? Do teachers want boxtops? I had no idea! How am I just learning this?

Not to be a downer, but are they neatly trimmed? And not expired?

I wonder where he really got those box tops from? And why do you hang on to them until you have five hundred? I have no patience. I would have handed them in at twenty, if I knew they were still doing that, which I didn't.

That is so cool! I'm extremely supportive of our school and give money whenever we can. But I really suck at the box tops. We just don't use a lot of those products, but I never remember bringing in the 2 or 3 we do have.

He has a loving, loving grandpa that works at the recycling center. And our school is thankful!!!

The boy knows how to get into a teacher's heart that's for sure.

I read 'em all and I'm still baffled. What's a box top?

I can't believe you closed your eyes LOL

Jeff D'Antonio said...

14 years of teaching have taught me to never EVER close my eyes when a student tells me to....

Scope said...

Were your eyes 100% closed? Or that 95% where you can still pretty much see if the kid is going to drop a big moose turd in your hands?

But SCORE on the boxtops!

Oh Frank! He really knows the way into your heart doesn't he?

Kt and Lynn: It is my understanding that the box tops are clipped from boxes from specific manufactures such as GLAD etc. They are then turned in to the program to earn money for the school. Now you can also receive "electronic box tops" by shopping at specified locations online.

My son and our family participated in this program when he was in school.

My sweet college boy son brought home a bag full of dead printer cartridges! So sweet of them to think of us, those kids :)

So those are actually useful? I save them and turn them in, but I don't think I could get to 523 if my life depended on it.
