Sometimes it's hard to remember WHAT we were talking about.

Many of us who teach in elementary school begin our day with something called a Morning Meeting. (As many of you already know.) This is a great way to build community in the classroom, and get to know the children better. We always begin Morning Meeting with a friendly greeting to one another, and then we do some telling sharing. This is the time we get a peek into what’s important to the children! Here is what happened today.

Sam: Last night I slept all night with my nightlight on, and not the hall light!

Jack: I slept in my own bed last night - all night long!

Carrie: My brother has a chicken that squeaks, and this morning at the bus stop I told him to keep squeaking it, and he did!

Lily: I am having a play date tomorrow with my friend Mary and we are going to do fun stuff! We are going to chase the cat all around the house!

Suzy: I have a big dog, and he looks like a bear and he likes to chase cats. He doesn’t eat the cats, but he does chew on chipmunks.

Ashley: Last night Stanley was in my bed. Then, he was trying hard to cough up a fur ball and it was gross. He always does that but the fur ball never comes out.

Hannah: My sister is going to a magic show, and she is going into a box and she is going to get sawed in half! Then she’s going to come home and saw me in half! (This was followed by a lot of crying- but we convinced her that magic was make-believe.)

Frank: I have rabbits and I know how they make babies. You put the boy in the girl’s cage. He jumps on her back. They shake around. Then we have to take the boy out of the cage and they have babies.

Luke: That’s disgusting.

Okay class, I think that might be enough sharing for the day…

  4. I like how it starts out meek, and ends with a bang.

Did you catch my double entendre?

  5. Why on earth would Frank's family be TRYING to make rabbit babies?

    Then again...nevermind.

  6. Oh Frank! You need to keep an eye on him in the next few years, I think....

  7. Well if anybody would know about how to make bunny babies, it would be Frank! I really wish I could follow along with Frank until he grows up. I'd love to see how he turns out! Frank is a hoot everytime he opens his mouth! :)

  10. Kindergarteners know more than we think. I am nearly six months pregnant, and I push into a Kindergarten classroom as ELL support. The kids finally noticed my belly. One little girl put her hand on her hip, looked me up and down, and announced, "Someone got you pregnant!"

I wasn't sure how to respond and instinctively said, "Yeah, my husband!" Not sure if that was the right reply. Sigh.

  24. That poor little girl thinking her sister was going to saw her in half!
I have a sister. I might try that.

Frank and The Bunny Shakes. That would be such a great name for a band. Not a good band, but a band nonetheless.

  27. Pffft! That accidentally happened with the rabbits at the preschool I once worked in. The kids took BOTH rabbits out to play at the same time and WHOOPSIE!

One of the other teachers devised a PERFECT solution to the problem should it ever arise again: she cut the finger tip off of a rubber glove and--taadaa!--instant bunny condom!

(Not that it was ever put on the poor rabbit, of course, but the idea of it still slays me. *snicker*)

  29. See, Frank just saved A LOT OF PARENTS the anxiety of having the birds and bees talk.

Now, everyone in the class has just learned the basics.
