Each morning I have an online “morning newsletter” of our local paper sent to me via my school mail. I have my mail account set up so that a snippet of each email is visible below a certain line. (Don’t ask me the technical terms - I work with five-year olds, remember? I like to calls things thingamabobber, dookickey and doodad.)
This morning as I was preparing to send my attendance and lunch count via that same email account, I received the newsletter. Smack on the front of the page was this picture of a collison that had occurred earlier this morning, and a horrifying headline. That car? It was the SPITTING image of MY car- the one I had let Sassy drive to school. Today. This morning. On that road.
My heart STOPPED IN MY CHEST and I was FROZEN.
Immediately thoughts were running through my head: Would someone have called me? Was that call from Sassy that went DEAD a half an hour ago HER? Shouldn’t someone be coming to GET ME?? WHAT’S GOING ON???
When I managed to collect myself, I grabbed my cell phone and somehow managed to press a button that called Sassy.
After one ring she answered, “Mom? MOM? What the (@** ARE YOU CALLING ME FOR? I’M IN SCHOOL! Jesus.”
Click.
Ahh. Never has a hang-up been so sweet.
And THAT’S the way to start a day.

whew...thank goodness...
That had to be scary! Made me immediately think of getting the call that my daughter had been pulled from the bottom of the town pool. And I was an hours drive away!
@MrMomWorld
Phew so glad she was fine!
Ah, what a relief.
Bob Snitchler? You made my heart stop again.
And I pray that things turned out okay.
Oh my hell! Kudos to you for keeping it together long enough to even FIND your phone! Thank the Lord she's ok. My Mommy Heart stopped as I was reading this. :(
Yikes! That must have been terrifying.
Oh, how terrifying! How is it you can tell a scary story like this and still make me giggle? THAT'S talent, girl!!
Terrifying indeed...but definitely reassuring to hear your child is okay. Thank God for cell phones...even if they are sometimes a distraction and addicting.
I'd have called her even if she was in the middle of a wedding or artificial insemination!! Anything to make sure they are okay, right mom??

Oh my hell! A parent's worst nightmare! Glad she's okay. And Bob Snitchler? I'm hoping and praying your story ends as well?
Which is why my girls will not be allowed to drive until after I'm dead.
This kind of thing brings on a world class adrenalin rush and pumps your heart rate up to earthquake levels! Coming back down from the ceiling afterward isn't easy either!!
When I worked in the ER as a nurse my biggest fear was that I would enter an exam room and find one of my kids. You couldn't have made it through the day without that call!
Why is being a mom so hard? I remember the first time I got a call that my daughter had been in a car accident. She was so hysterical, she couldn't even tell me if she was okay or not. We drove, practically flying to where she was. She was cut up but okay.
I'm so glad Sassy was just fine, even if she did hang up on you! :)
Perfect definition of sweet relief, alright.
Thank you for the reminder of how quickly life can change.
I'm going to stop being such a grumbler, and appreciate the same safeness of it all.
Ohmygoodness. So glad she was in school. xo
and you got your cardio exercise in for the day!!!!!!!
Does Sassy know that someone stole her car from the school parking lot and crashed it?
Yikes! NOT the way to start your day! Glad it wasn't Sassy!
Would you people stop giving me reasons to keep putting off my 16 year olds desire for his drivers license! Seriously happy that Sassy was just fine!
HOLY SH*T!!
Man, I'd be on the phone, out the door!
I'm not ready for my god-daughter to get her license next year let alone my children!!
ps- massive amounts of cheers to you for sending her in a big-assed SUV to keep her safe!!
Awww kudos to you for being that patient. I couldn't have.
I just tagged you..check it out at www.heartsmakefamilies.com
Oh shit! That must have been really scary!! Glad you were able to annoy her with your phone all though.
When she becomes a mom, she'll understand.
I'm really glad that she is okay!
Glad she's ok! Now i have a picture to show my daughter as to why she's NEVER getting her license...she's 3 yrs away from it! 3 YEARS!!!
That happened to me last year with my mom and sister. White BMW in the part of town I knew they were in. I was glad for pushbutton phones because I could not have dialed to save my life.
THEN THEY DIDN'T ANSWER THE PHONE. I called twice. Finally my sister called to tell me that they were trying to get out of a hospital parking lot and it was so complicated AND SOMEONE WOULDN'T STOP CALLING HER.
When you got to the part that she picked up the phone, I realized I had been holding my breath, because when I expelled the air I almost blew my laptop away.
Holy Freakin' Tamoles!
You better get a stiff drink at lunch. No one would blame you for having one while on the job today.
Glad she's okay and I'm glad your heart is beating again...it may still be experiencing some glitches, but it will recover.
Lawd! *clutching chest* and then *whew* .... :)
Now I have kids that never call.. not what I thought, after all I've done for them.. Hard asses aren't appreciated until they are dead..
Or getting cursed out!
there was an accident near my town last week where a girl was taking her brother to school, pulled out of HER DRIVEWAY and was t-boned by her classmate. she and her brother died immediately and the classmate was injured really bad! I cant imagine waking up as the parents and seeing the site everyday where their two children died together..... so so sad.
I'm really glad that she is okay!
