Note to Self:
When leaving the house to take your daughter to her sports massage and breakfast, make SURE to turn off the stove. Apparently the water you are boiling with cinnamon and nutmeg IS flammable.
The first sign something was wrong? Hearing the dogs barking wildly and the smoke alarm going off when I got out of my car. I managed to throw the pot in a tub of water JUST IN THE NICK OF TIME. Oh, and apparently I CAN run.
I was going for the great smell of cinnamon and nutmeg and ended up with the smell of freshly burned forest.
I like to f*&@ up once a day. It keeps me humble.

Thank God for cinnamon scented Nike's!
Glad you caught it when you did.
Now, you need the sports massage and breakfast!
That was close. At least you are all okay.
Ouch! Nice save though.
now you need a double martini! I am glad you have dogs!
It's probably because you need to eat real food, like potato chips.
It's a regular laugh-a-minute at your place. Yeah, Ha, ha, ha...sniff, sniff.
Hey! How did you manage to set my keyboard on fire just from leaving a comment here?
Love how you can make a near disaster funny. I hope I never have to find out if I can run.
xx
I can never share this with Pale Rider. It will make him more paranoid than ever.
Glad all is well!
Only once a day? I try and fuck up at least every 4 hours, it keeps everyone around me on their toes.
Now your house smells like a Yankee Candle crack den.
Peace - Rene
Wow, talk about timing! Thank goodness you got home when you did. I had my first kitchen fire scare about a month ago and I don't think I've ever moved so fast in my entire life!
Glad to hear that nothing was destroyed beyond the pot.
Oh yikes!!! Years ago, I learned how fast a husband can run out of the house with a flaming frying pan (I was heating oil to cook something and got distracted by something on TV). the answer? Pretty damned fast!
I am glad you didnt burn the house down. Be thankfulyou came home when you did.
About a week or two ago, I posted the results of my boiling sugar and water together. I'm afraid my recipe turned out much the same as yours did.
Oh my gosh Vodka Mom good thing you go back in time!
I turned a pancake into a brickett a couple weeks ago. Mmm, roughage.
I humbled myself in the same way last fall, nearly killing all of us.
Glad everything is okay!
glad you caught that one in time...at least the house smells fresh now. oy, i can think of better ways to stay humble. smiles.
That was soooooo lucky. Flucky, you might say! I love cinnamon anyway, did you know it can be a light cologne too?
Secretia
Whoops. Hate when that happens.
LOL Me too....should read this post.....

Thats the only reason to start a fire in your house ;)
I'm guessing you're a tad distracted since heading back to school? I'm just so freakin' tired...
I sincerely hope the picture you posted is something you found on the internet and not an actual photo of the fire itself, because I know we all reach for the camera at potential blogging moments, but I'm not sure I'd do it if my kitchen were on fire.
That's the reason I try to avoid drinking too much while cooking.Something will always burn.
Glad you and your house are okay, except for the smell.
ONCE A DAY? Stop it, I'm laughing so hard my sides hurt. NO REALLY, STOP, my spleen just burst and broke a rib.
Dang Girl... where's your head today? I tried that once myself, but it WAS NOT with cinnamon so it REALLY smelled bad.
Di
I hope that is a stock image and not what you came home too. Good to hear all was okay.
Phew! An ewwy close call. Thank goodness you grabbed that pot with a potholder.
Mr. M threw his pajama shirt on top of a lamp once and unbeknownst to me. And, err, well, let's just say I'm awfully glad I didn't wave him off in favor the book I was reading when he said, a little while later, "Mom it smells funny in here."
burned forest...I think pottery barn sells that sent of candle:) lol
A friendly reminder from your local volunteer fire department:
TURN OFF THE DAMN STOVE BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE HOUSE!!!!!
There. My work is done here. That is all.
PS. At least you know your smoke alarms work. And if they ever stop working, you know your dogs are fully functional as backup smoke alarms. That's a good thing to know.
PPS. TURN OFF THE DAMN STOVE BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE HOUSE!!!!!!
You know, they have potpourri that smells like cinnamon.
Once a day seems reasonable. I have been looking at it the wrong way, by trying to limit the fuckups to one a day--instead it should be a goal
Ok that was a close one! If you really want your house to smell nice, come on over and try to win the fall gift up for grabs. It's much safer and a little prettier!!!!
I did that with BROCCOLI once. Broccoli stinks unimaginably bad when scorched.
YIKES! I hate that smell too ... glad you got there in time!
You can get the burning forest smell by attempting to boil pine needles/branches freshly cut off the Christmas tree. Or so I've been told... not like I would know first hand :)
I would like you to know...you are in good company!!!
Shuddering over here... SCARY. And to think that people think we're ADULTS! And like, capable and shit. Cuz I have done pleeeeenty of stupid stuff in my day, my dear. Glad you got it out in time. Also, Glad you told me that tidbit so that I don't f&ck it up, too!
This is why I stick to fabreeze there is no chance of fiery death.
You've just described almost every cooking moment I have!
"I like to f*&@ up once a day."
Only once a day? What a woman.
At least you won't have to exercise now for another month!
I like it when you f&^% up cos it's so damned entertaining....:))))
You feel so very nice to f@!k up things once in a while. It keeps the mundane out of routines
Never a dull moment with you....good thing you came home when you did! Have a wonderful Sunday!
Once a day makes you humble?? My first f**K up usually comes before 7 am! haha! I am very humble!
lol.
yeah.
an intentional
f!%k up
gets entertaining at times.
In the words of my students: OMG!! So glad you didn't burn down the house. (By the way, when I saw the title of this post, I thought you were going to tell me somebody's- Sassys?- pants were on fire. Glad it was just the house. That sounds terrible doesn't it?!)
An open bag of charcoal will absorb the smoke smell.
You probably shouldn't ask how I know that.
I'm relieved you got home when you did! Cause that makes it okay to chuckle a little bit.
Maybe you should get one of those plug-in type things?
just once a day? i usually go for two or three minimum...... well, i don't go for it as much as i just do it. but you know what i mean....
Freshly burned pine forest? That would be nicer than my son's car which smells like Teenage Boy Sweating in a Pine Forest.
Ahh, I'm pretty sure we all F up at least once a day, just most people try to keep it hushed up.
Friday my daughter set up her precious Nightmare Before Xmas collection up on a set of new shelves in her room. It looked AMAZING!
Yeah, that's right: LOOKED.
Then yesterday while she was at her Dad's I went in there to put away some clothes and walked right into the damn shelf and knocked half the stuff right off it. Now I'm in disgrace because I can't hide what I did by replacing it all just so, because I can't remember how it all went.
Who walks face first right into a SHELF, hmm?!
You're in good company, VM. And, by the way, BRAVO on getting to that fire in time!!!!
Can you imagine what burnt tea kettle smells like? That's what I came home to once when my kids' school had no electricity & they were home with their dad. He put the kettle on our electric burner, and then our power went out. When they left to go to an "after school" thing the power was still out. Needless to say, it came back on before I got home that evening.
Occasionally I still find bits of burnt tea kettle in odd places in my kitchen!
I too have daily f-up's that keep me humble. Although, I must say, they aren't exactly fun. You know what will really smell up a house is if you hit an extra number on the microwave when you are cooking those Lean Cuisines. Nothing like the smell of nuked plastic!! Take care and thankfully the house didn't burn down!

I F-up constantly, yet not so humble.
Smokey the Bear would be proud.
Yipe!
Old Dog hates it when I do that stuff....
Betcha didn't need coffee after that!
Glad you all survived the fire, if not the smell :-)
See when you have OCD like me and check the stove three or four times before you leave the house, you usually don't have to worry about those things...Knock on wood of course :)
Some bowls of baking soda set out around your house will help absorb the smell, too.
EEK! My worst fear! Glad all is well and thanks for the reminder to CHECK THE STOVE before leaving the house!
Oh no! I'm glad everyone and everything is okay- be careful!!!!
Nothing like the scent of adreniline to start off the day!
Glad you're OK!!
I love the way you can weave a near-tragedy into an absolute scream of a story. :-)
I totally f*&@ked up once and caught my house on fire. Well, it wasn't really MY house, I was a single mom renting the upstairs from my parents (my brother & wife lived below).... and that's a story for another day. LOL
