Why can't the gas station be on the WAY to work?

Dear Sassy,

I just wanted to thank you for my exciting ride/walk to work this morning.

There is NOTHING quite like the feeling of “maybe I’ll run out of gas” that gets your heart pumping in the morning.

Oh, and when that orange gas light (that is located near the E setting on the gas gauge) comes on, you are supposed to put gas IN. You are not to go all the way to work and BACK without telling your mother she needs gas.

And that three blocks (in the newly fallen snow) I had to walk to get to my school when my car died? That totally cancelled out my trip to the gym tonight. And I’m thinking that since I had to carry my teacher bag, my computer and all the snacks for the 100th day of school party as well, it means no weight lifting needed, either.

A word of caution - don’t ask me to borrow the car for awhile. I’m still pissed.

This was the ONE day I was thankful that Tightwad is still out of work. Now, if I could JUST get him to answer his phone.....

and YES, the gas station is two blocks PAST where I work.

I know the reasons why lions eat there young. So do you and this is just one of them.

Grrrrrr. It would take months before I got over being pissed.

Oh that sucks big time. I agree, don't ask anytime soon!

Sassy...

yikes! Going to take some major sucking up to make up for this ...

Lol...I think a certain kid would have to walk as far as I did just to make it up to me, and then he/she still wouldn't be able to use my car!!

ouch! thats not good;)

Sounds a lot like Sassy needs to be grounded.

Man...I'm a champion at riding the gas gauge, but even I wouldn't take it that far.

My old car would actually tell me how many miles I had until I ran out of gas. My new one doesn't do this and when my gaslight comes on, I whiteknuckle it all the way to the station.

Yet, I never fill up before the damn light comes on.

madtexter ☺☺☺☺☺☺ (corey james) said...

Heavenstomergatroy! If it weren't for the little warning light telling me I need gas, I'd ALWAYS run out.

(Besides, I'm always gassy. Why should I worry about my car?) It's never really on my mind.

I know this isn't supposed to be funny...or is it? BWWAHHAHA! I'm not alone in this world...Shame on you, Sassy.

Gah, that sucks! So not cool, Sassy!

I'm pissed on your behalf. Miss Bindergarten had it easy compared to you.

So sorry! You had a right to be pissed!

Just to play Devil's Advocate here, your daughter probably didn't even see it was running on empty. Are you familiar with the term, "selective blindness"? That's an affliction all children (and most husbands) seem to have that doesn't go away until the instant the kid is out on their own without mom watching over their shoulder to keep them from harm!! Of course, that is if we let them live that long!! :)

SmartBear said...

Wait...you mean, mine will be a teenager someday? I did NOT sign up for that! I'd make her hoof it for awhile! LOL!

Brian Miller said...

i have said a few of those orange gas light prayers...hope shes got good shoes for walking. smiles.

Bloody kids.

Sue said...

No words, those damn kids! And unfortunately they will be "kids" forever! My 26 year old son just did something similiar the other day. Only difference, I live by a gas station!
Take care, Sue

And no, Sassy, the big red E does NOT stand for "Enough."

Love, Your mom's friend who has three sassy b's (2 male, one female) of her own!

Dani borrowed my car last weekend and got a flat. Fortunately, I got road hazard protection and the flat repair was free. She's coming home AGAIN this weekend. No!! You can't take my car to North Philly!!! (she wants to see her friend who goes to Temple) I won't be able to drive a chassis, because that's all that will be left of the car if you take it!

Joanie M said...

Oh! and she's quitting college after this semester.

citymouse said...

I couldn't read your post to my husband without choking back the laughter. Not only did my two older boys do that ump-teen times, but they never seemed bothered by it. When they destroyed the transmission in my Jeep, it wasn't their fault. OH NO. It was a defect in the car. I am thankful they are no longer at home/driving my vehicles (although, interestingly enough, neither of them own cars at the moment, for different reasons.) However, my 3rd son is in the hot, hot heat of drivers ed. No wonder I color my hair.

Beth P. said...

Oh gosh. That royally sucks. No child of mine would even consider asking for the car again after this if he/she knew what was good for them.

Anything Fits a Naked Man said...

Well, once again, you made me laugh while you told a HORRIBLE story!! So sorry you had to endure that!

I can't criticize your daughter, however, because I am SO guilty of "riding the Empty gauge!" Glad you made it back home!

AJ said...

ah yes... gotta love that! so much to look forward to!

Fiftiesmom said...

My daughter uses my car more than I do since she is taking her little "vacation" from college this semester and will have the nerve to come home after she has used it all day and tell me "I" need gas. Or she'll fuss because I didn't leave her any gas and she had to fill it up so she could get to work/mall/boyfriends.
At least you were close to school!

3 Men and a Lady said...

If she's grounded from driving long enough she'll never do it again.

The Green Family said...

OMG!!! I had to laugh because I drive my husband NUTZ not putting gas in the car until the last minute Ü

It always ends up that when he drives it, it's time to fill up!

SkylersDad said...

Sounds like my wife. She never fills up the car, just continues to run on the bottom half of the tank!

Marg said...

Great...something to look forward to when my angel gets her licence in May.

The Blue Zoo said...

Im glad my kids aren't old enough to borrow the car yet!

Annabelle said...

Oh VM - sounds like someone's getting the silent treatment from you tonight. I would be furious, but you should go and eat some cake - u deserve it after that trudge through the snow!

Frau said...

OH Sassy.....how could you!! She gave you life!! I'd probably never let her drive my car again. But I have forgiveness issues.

Quilting in My Pyjamas said...

How rude! How inconsiderate!

Here's an idea...

Maybe you could half cook her dinner, or only half wash her clothes this week as a lesson in inconvenience.

My husband is going to get in his car tomorrow morning to discover there isnt enough petrol to get him to work. I did go to the petrol station but the lineup was too long.

Ladybird World Mother said...

I LOVE the fact that you're so pissed that you're commenting on your own post! And got to be the first. Thats pretty good on this blog, VM!! xx

SandyCarlson said...

There's a reason the gas gauge is right out front.... What a day!

Trac~ said...

Aww... I'm sorry to hear that Vodka Mom - I agree though - I would be pissed for a while and definitely would NOT let her drive your car for quite some time until she can be responsible enough to fill up your gas tank, or at the very least let you know in advance that you need gas before you have to walk in the snow to school. *sigh* Big hugs!

Vodka Mom said...

Unfortunately, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree! I'm afraid I taught her that little trick.

ヤフー被リンク said...

So let's hope good luck with us everyday, or we should put a bottle of gas in the car for preparation.

Dory said...

I do that all the time... forget to look at the gas gauge. And I'm 37, not a teenager. But that's why they call me Dory. *sigh*

Secretia said...

I like my V8 suv so much better when the gas tank is full!

Not The Rockefellers said...

Oh man!
Truth is...Sassy probably didn't even notice the gauge
It's just always mysteriously full!

Sassy, we all slip up sometimes
but we have to make things right

You owe your Mom some pampering :)

Peace ~ Rene

The Pipster said...

That just sucks. Time for a vacation to a Caribbean island with you, yourself and you.

Michele said...

Yep, no need for that trip to the gym.

My sons pulled this trick once or twice. Then I started leaving the tank on empty so that when they borrowed the car they were forced to get gas in order to get where they were going. Silly boys! They always filled it up. Me? I'd put in a couple of bucks. They caught on but it took awhile.

It's stories like this that make me glad that I forgot to have kids!

Wendy said...

What is it with unresposible teenagers? I have one just like it of my own. I say we run the car almost to empty and give them the keys! LOL

CSY said...

I'm printing this out and keeping it on my fridge...no, mine aren't old enough to drive yet - but it's a good JUST IN CASE.

R.J. said...

I love the names you call your family members. Thankfully when my son ran out of gas, he was driving and had to walk for a refill. Best lesson ever. Unfortunately, we parents sometimes have to pay the price for our kids. Sorry you had to walk to work.

suzicate said...

Oh, man that sucks...I'm guessing things weren't charming at home last night...wouldn't have been if I had to walk the rest of the way to work!

remind me not to have kids. oh wait, i already did.

damn.

If that happened to me that someone had better stay elsewhere for a few days.

Dear Vodka Mom, just wanted to say thank you for your awesome posts. I love reading your blog. You make me laugh and smile. I'm sorry that you had to walk to work today. Kids, seriously. Maybe you should've made Sassy carry you to work on her back while you whined and complained that it was SO cold. Love you, hope your day improves. Can't wait to hear about the 100th day of school. Do your kids get to bring 100 of something to school? My son did on his 100th day. He brought 100 marbles. Hopefully, there will be no live animals today.

Crys said...

I think you should demand $20 from her just for your trouble.

I know this is not funny to you, but I am laughing hysterically!!!

I learned how to drive in Texas and as a rule you never let your gas tank go past 1/2 empty (full for the optimists!) because you never know where the next gas station may be. When I moved to NY I noticed that I was the only one who did this. Now my car tells me how many miles I can go without gas and I love to play the will I or won't I make it to work game!

p.s.- happy 100th day of school! we counted 100 pieces of popcorn for snack (and then added extra because 100 wasn't exactly enough for the whole class!)

Ultimate car borrowing faux pas. She'll be walking for a while too, I'm guessing?

ANNOYING!!! At least you are a kindergarten teacher and were probably wearing sensible shoes!

I live about 9 miles from the nearest gas station. It's always fun to turn into my rural mountain road (6 miles through winding canyons to home) and have that light go on.

Faux Farm Girl said...

After the third episode of my teenager being strandeded with no gas,(why doesn't E mean empty to them?)I gave my daughter a AAA card and told her that if she ever got stuck to call them, they would respond faster and care more! Got one for myself too cause that works both ways and she would leave me stranded while she got her nails done.
