A word of advice to any potential kindergarten or first grade teachers:

When talking to the children about what they want to be when they grow up, be very careful.

If one of your darlings says they play the piano, and they want to be a “Piano-ER” when go grow up, let it go.

Do NOT tell the whole class the real name of what it is she wants to be. THEY will hear PEEanist.

Unless, of course, you want to start a mass riot of children shouting PEE PEE PEE for about twelve minutes, that will result in mass hysterical laughter.

Then, by all means, go right ahead.

Also - don't say it to a group of "adult" men. 'Cause I'm pretty sure it will result in the same reaction.

SO funny!! I'm a teacher too and 90% of the time I'm able to figure out what there is to snicker about before I say it. What sucks is the other 10%. :)

Little kids crack me up...All they need is a small sniff of a rude word and they're off!

Hey, they just say what all the grown ups are thinking. Growing up & getting a filter is overrated!

I hate the word 'p(ee)anist'.

I once told my high school music teacher, when he corrected my grammar, "If it was supposed to be pronounced that way, the thing would be called a peeano."

Hmmmm...This sounds like something you learned through personal experience!

Oh yes..that would do it. I have a 1st grader and her favorite joke right now is: "If you are an American before you go into the bathroom and you are an American when you leave the bathroom what are you while you are in the bathroom"

This one is a different league. At least pee-anist is sort of sweet...Age appropriate.

Earlier in the school year I told our Yr 1s that a teacher on a different grade was getting married and when she returned she would have a new name. She would be Mrs Hoare. Of course in the staffroom we'd all had a giggle and assumed that at some point in the past it must've had a more exotic pronunication. I thought it was pretty safe that 6 year olds would let it pass.

Nope.

Hands pumped, kids stood up, the chant went up "She's a whore! She's a whore! She's a whore!"
I sat gobsmacked, almost laughed hysterically because I was so freaking shocked. I managed to hold it together and look pretty upset. My lord. I cried with laughter everytime I thought about it that day.

Where on earth do they get things like that from!

Well, that's a very wise advice for all the kindergarden teachers out there

On a positive note, that could have heard thing much worse or starting show and tell with their very own pianists.

Yeah, I can't even THINK about that word without cracking up. Does this mean I have the humor of a kindergartner?

At least they didn't drop a syllable as an excuse to shout out a certain part of the male anatomy.

Kids!

You're right. Sometimes it's just better to let those things go. Especially in this case kiddo.

Also, don't substitute "weenie" for "hot dog" when speaking to a first grader.

But you already knew that.

I, on the other hand, learned the hard way.

(Hee hee! I said "hard.")

Fun blog.

I'm glad I came across it.

It's a tricky thing, teaching five year olds. God bless you and your patience and your potty talk tolerance.
