Had I known I was going to be doing so much learning today, I would have studied harder.

Things we learned at the (stone) house of vodka today.

1. When you have a new kitty that is very rambunctious, odds are great that he will knock over not one but two large potted plants. (And you KNOW where all the dirt from said pots ended up. I knew I should have taken the shop-vac.)

2. If your son goes out sled-riding with the Do-Good Gang, he will of COURSE take his phone with him. That phone will starts its adventure in a pile of snow, and will end up in a bowl of rice on your kitchen counter. (We will be conducting services at 9:00 a.m., if it doesn’t survive the night. In lieu of flowers please vote on babble.)

3. When you can’t find the kitty because he knows in his trouble for knocking over your PLANTS, try looking on your computer. (He’s probably emailing all his friends looking for asylum.)

4. One of the do-good boys discovered that if you try to run down the hardwood steps from the second floor to the living room with shoes that are covered in salt, you will slip and bounce down the last five steps, landing painfully on your bottom. (Call me crazy, but I’m guessing he’ll be sore for quite some time. And now I know how they ran out of salt. See #6)

5. When you allow your daughter to take your 4-wheel drive SUV to run errands before she goes to college, she will probably ignore your request that she NOT take the highway to the mall. And, when she enters said highway, even in 4-Wheel drive, she will engage in a slide and spin that will take her across the highway and spin her around several times. I can tell you right now, that there was surely a guardian angel riding with her today, and he went above and beyond the call of duty. (I am still reeling from this. And so is she.)

6. When your son tells you that he did indeed salt the driveway, check it before you pile the kids into your car to take them to their dad’s house. Odds are great that he ran out of salt on the flat part of the driveway outside the small garage and never made it to the 90 degree incline that immediately shoots you on to the busy, winding, narrow, SNOW COVERED road. (Attention Mr. Common Sense- you need to make a return visit. It appears The Golden Boy was hiding on the day you made your delivery.) And yes, we slid down the driveway onto the road, honking ALL THE WAY in the hopes that the tan Volvo heading towards us would hear and see us before making contact. He barely missed us. I am still shaking.

I’m here to tell you that today’s lessons will be felt for quite some time to come. However, Sassy’s lesson reminded us that each day, each moment is a gift. I am wrapping my gifts in my arms tonight, and thinking of those who are not as fortunate. (I love you sis. With all that I am.)

I’m also leaving a little something out for that guardian angel of ours. She's had a busy, busy day.

Oh my, a day that I can take a bow to. I'm not worthy, I'm not worthy. First, I knew there was a reason I didn't have boys, the overseer of the universe knew I would die of a heartattack before the child even reached 10. Second, I hate snow and now I know why. My 19 year old would have destroyed my car long ago. She insists that she is a good driver because she has never had an accident or a ticket but not a person in her family likes to get in the car with her. Third, hug that beautiful kitten. I'll take a kitten over a puppy any day. At least they know where to pee and poop! I'm so glad that everyone is healthy and fine.

Years ago, I too did the spinning around in the car on the freeway. Going down an entrance ramp, the car spun twice all the way across four lanes. Luckily for me the car stopped as though I had parked it on the opposite shoulder missing the wall by inches. I looked in my rear view mirror and every lane had stopped about a hundred yards back. My guardian angel helped me with that one. I cried all the way home. My heart still flutters every time I think about it.

Rice worked for my son's phone. The little guy he Manny's thought it would be funny to put a snowball in his pocket! Took about 24 hours, so be patient.

So glad your baby girl is okay.

Hell, send your guardian angel to a spa for a week. Otherwise she might need to do a short stint in a guardian angel psych ward to get over that day herself!

Ugh ! Days like that made me want to just lock the kids in their rooms until they were, like, 40.

I am glad that your Guardian Angel is on top of things. They can be good that way.. ours was pretty good too.

Love you, love your kitty :)

Having experienced that death spiral on ice myself a time or two, I am glad that all of you have made it through your ice dancing today!!

It is events like this that explain why I now live in Austin!! Austin knows that Texans cannot drive on ice, so when there is a lot of ice, the city shuts down and everyone stays home til it's gone!!!!

I am glad that everyone is alright. I had a spin out on the freeway a few years ago and remember while we were spinning I saw the oncoming traffic driving toward us and it was the scariest thing ever. (there was a guardian angel that day for us too because we didn't hit anyone else.) It still freaks me out when I drive in anything, but sunshine and dry roads.
And I am sorry that kitten is seriously so cute. I don't see how it could cause any damage! ;)

Over 15 years ago my then best friend had a spin out on the 101 North.

He spun across FOUR lanes and ended up on the shoulder facing the wrong way.

Cops SHUT the freeway down so they could get him out of his backwards position. When you close a freeway in Los Angeles, it's bad. His spin out was so big he made all the local news broadcasts.

But he got out safely. For AN ENTIRE YEAR all he talked about was that spin. Once at our favorite breakfast hangout, 6 of us had gathered and my friend once again started talking about his near death experience.

As if on cue, 2 of his friends turned to him and screamed YOU'RE ALIVE, SHUT UP, WE'RE SICK OF HEARING ABOUT YOUR NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE.

I laughed.

Very important info for cat owners: cat puke in laptop keyboard = dead laptop. Warn others!

That's it! I am never living anywhere where there is snow and my children are never going to learn to drive. My heart is up in my throat for you!

Oh my gosh! So, it was really a crazy day yesterday!
I already knew about Sassy. I had no idea you guys were practicing bob-sledding in the driveway!

That was a day to forget!!!!!

Oh, and about that kitty, he emailed me 5 times to let me know he was looking for treats in the mail. . . because he was grounded for knocking over plants at home!

So glad for that guardian angel. Looks like she/he might be keeping the cat alive, too!

OMG! Numbers 5 and 6 are so terrifying but I'm glad you have some reliable guardian angels looking out for you all :)

Also, that is the cutest little kitten! How could you ever get mad at that face??

Holy cow!! Your guardian angels need a vacation. I don't think I would grant them any time off though, until Sassy and Golden Boy are fully grown and independent. Then you might only let them have an hour or so.
Sounds like you had a pretty rough day!

Super post! Brought tears to my eyes. I agree about sending the guardian angel to the spa--she's definitely working over time! Love the kitty. Glad you made it through the day.
PS. I found you thru my friend Scope--I love your smart, funny blog. Thanks for sharing!
