Frankly, the laughing out loud was the best part of the gift.....

I know I speak for most teachers when I say the BEST end of the year gifts are the handwritten notes, the hugs, the smiles and the tears from the children that you've loved all year long.  I never expect anything big, and my heart swells when I see a handwritten card handed to me by a child.  That is the gift that means something.

However.

Yesterday, Max came in carrying quite a large basket.  "This is for YOU, Mrs. Smythe!!" he shouted.

I was shocked at the gorgeous basket, and teared up when I saw the card that said "Teachers plant the seeds of knowledge."  They all know how much I love flowers and gardening and were a part of a big weeding/planting project last week.   I was even more verklempt when Max handed me a card that he had written telling me how "AWESOME" I was.

And then I reached in and grabbed a card that had something inside.  It was a Starbucks Gift card for  a LARGE amount!

"WOW!"  I said, looking at him in shock, "That is so generous! Max, you did NOT have to do that!"

"Well," he said with a huge smile, "my mom said that after putting up with me for 180 days, it was the LEAST we could do."    Smile,  smile.

Boom.

Best line EVER!

(Damn, I'm gonna miss the crap outta that kid....)

I love it! I guess his mom would have to have a sense of humor with a child like him...
Thanks for sharing your joys and struggles. We're all rooting for you!

A mother who is NOT in denial, that's for sure.

May your summer be filled with sun and sun, and your biggest problem be that you need more ice in your drink.

So sweet - and so funny! ;) I wonder if she has stock in Starbucks herself to keep up with Max!

Now THAT is a fabulous gift for a fabulous teacher. It's clear that mom and Max really know and care about you. And the sweet letter and book in your office mail (prior posts) was so thoughtful.

As for the bastard of a landlord, all I can say in karma is a powerful thing to mess with. So sorry for the hassles.

ENJOY summer!

All teachers would like to find him in their classrooms - and not just for the swag.

its the Max's of the world that bring the myriad of colors to teaching children. It is nice that you were appreciated but I am sure that Max's mother knows how much you got her child.. As a parent that was what I wanted most- for people to appreciate the talents , the funny elements and the quirks of my son..He is an adult now and when I look back at his teachers- the ones that are most revered by him were the ones who accepted him as a whole package deal- warts and all.. You get that about children..It is your gift...
Happy summer school teaching.. Warmest regards from an Alberta k teacher,
Anna
