"Well, it connects two short sentences that are related. I might write 'John is a darling boy; (STRESSING THE SEMICOLON HERE) he likes to make people smile.' "
John: "Wouldn't I just say 'and' there?"
"Yes, you could do that, but if you are feeling lazy, you can just put a semicolon in there, too."
John: (with the most serious face and finger pointed in the air) -- "I should really look into using semi colons then..."
