I just wanted a pedicure...

This tends to come up when the capris come out...

"Mrs. Smith, is that a tattoo on your leg?"

Me: "Yes, Susie, it is. It's a heart, with the name of someone special on it. It's on my ankle, though, not my leg."

Johnny: "Is it your name? Who is it?? Your kid???"

Me: "It's the name of someone I love, someone who was very special to me. It's my nephew's name; he's my sister's son. He died a couple of years ago, and I have his name on my ankle to remember him by."

Susie: "Oh....soooo.... are you gonna get MORE???"

Me: "I hope not honey. I sure hope not..."

That's really the only one? No martini glass on your hipbone?

I think it is sweet that you have his name tattooed on your ankle. What a kind gesture.

And I hope there are no more!

We had a kid last week telling us about his mother's new tattoo. He even called it a tramp stamp. Nice...

They must think that you are the coolest and toughest teacher ever.

Good heavens. I hope not, too. Do love a nice tribute tattoo, though. But you're right - you sure don't want a collection of them...

Kat said...

I hope I never have to get any tattoos either.

How sweet to honor him that way.. You know..they say tattoos are addicting! We might have to change your name to "I need a tattoo people"

Bitter-sweet story.

A totally bittersweet post... but I'm still laughing at Beth's student's comment, Tramp Stamp!!!

Maybe you should give the kids more classes on human biology.

I love that you have a tattoo to honor him! That is so wonderful!

Maybe when you're really old . . . like 86. . . or 97. . . you'll be all tatooed up. . .looking like a Red Hot Motorcycle Momma!

Ya know what they say "Once you have ink you got to have more." Though I hope not more for your reason, you should totally get a small martini on say "your big toe" I always thought that was a cute place to have one.

And sorry for your lose.

Cute!

I used to work in an assisted living. When I got my first tattoo(a small flower on the top of my right hand) the residents went crazy over it! One little lady would ask me, almost every morning, if I drew it on there each day before going to work! LOL

What about the tattoo of the mouse? You know, the one at the top of your leg / bottom of your belly?

Oh, that's right...your pussy ate it.

NO... no more tattoos hopefully.

Sorry about the tatt, prayers for no more.

For myself, I'm done with pedicures. I've been Pedi-Cured!

Really? I've got one on my ankle too! My little students asked me once when I forgot to wear socks to school what my tattoo was. When I told them a bird and asked them to guess which kind (thinking I'd tie in the body art realization into my lesson plans on birds and animals), I got several great guesses. "Buzzard," "Dat bird on da quarter," and "a big fat parrot."

Who knew a tiny hummingbird could cause such a stir? :)

I know yours has a very special meaning but your school allows you to have it show in class? In the area that I taught at it didn't matter what it was for they had to be covered no matter what. My friend had one to remember her sister by and she was told to either cover it or she may not be renewing her contract.

forcryeye said...

I hear ya. When I co-taught at the Montessori school, the kids used to ask me if it was a press on tattoo on my arm and ankle...ha ha.

I've never thought about getting a remembrance tat, too neat! Hope you don't have to get anymore either!

Lady Fi said all that can be said... Bittersweet. You're one person I pray only has a single piece of ink art.

I love how you did that to honor your nephew, bitter sweet but with so much love! Wanted to drop in and say HI since I am always reading you from the shadows. Plus wanted to share the One Lovely Blog award with you! Go grab it! Happy Tuesday!

How great that your tatoo questions come up and that you get to share your love for your nephew with all who ask. Lovely.

I have my entire right foot nearly covered (on the top) for my mother... it's always fun to explain to people who dont get it or think it's fake.. ::) in any case, it is a great way to be sure they are with you forever!

I too hope it's your only one, what a special remembrance of your nephew.

I love to hear about women who are not in their 20's having tattoos. Thinking of getting one myself...
Yours is a nice remembrance.

I hope this is the last of your ink.

Sue said...

Let's pray you never have to get another tatt for the reason you have this one. But, maybe for fun? I have one on my shoulder but no one can see if so I love when people talk trash to me about tattoos. It's like you let them hang their self, then "share". Take care, Sue

NO MORE TATTOOS!!! We don't like how they arrived

Sweet innocence of a child...
I hope you will never have to get another one like that.

Hmmm, a martini glass tattoo, in the right place, COULD be fun, but this is from a girl who can't abide needles, so don't listen to me.
Those darn Kindergarteners - they have an endless barrage of questions, don't they?

That is a wonderful way to remember your nephew. Did anyone else in the family get a tattoo with his name on it!

namaste said...

such a sad loss of a young life. it is a beautiful tribute to have for his life.

sooo... does is annoy you to have to keep explaining to people that don't always get it?

What a lovely gesture, my sister got her ankle done and said that it was the most painful place because of all the bone.

I've toyed with the idea of getting inked but can never decide on something that I want to wear for the rest of my life.

A tribute tattoo is the only one that would have any meaning for whole lifetime. Unfortunately my Dad (who I would probably be remembering if I were to do it) always told me that the tattoo on his arm was one of the biggest mistakes of his life.

Granted it was done with a a blue ballpoint pen and sewing needle jailhouse style, when he was a teenager and was just his initials.

I somehow can't get past that when I think about doing it.

Well THANK YOU for bringing us all down.

I hope you don't have to get any more tats for that reason, but if you decide to get some more for fun, drop by my bad tat series to pick out something special!

Aw. That's about the only reason I could imagine getting one, too, I think...

Here's hoping I never do. xo

i hear you. I have a tattoo as well, and every summer as i wear short sleeves i get innundated with people asking me what it means, and if i'm gonna get more...

I hope you never have to get another one.

I can't bring myself to pay someone to hurt me with needles, but I would totally wear a sticker if something happened to you.

How sweet. Though, tattoo's aren't too bad, I have five myself. Though, I got them when I was younger, and okay, so I wish I hadn't and they'd all disapear into the land of "Damn, wish I wouldn't of done that" but, they are here to stay...

You need some happy tattoos. Maybe a nice sleeve of butterflies and flowers? The kids would dig that.

Sorry that your tat is one that was done in a sad circumstance but I do love the idea that you will always be able to remember your nephew in this way.

I have three tattoos. My first one, a hummingbird, is on my lower back on the left. It was done after my grandmother passed away, sort as a reminder of her. A couple of years later, I got a sunshine on my shoulder, just because. I say that I got it because sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy. LOL A couple of years after that, I got one on the back of my right calf. My students are always surprised to see it, and they ask if it's real. Then they want to know if I have more. :) I do want to get another one. They ARE addicting!!

I hope not too!

Such a thoughtful tribute - and so innocent the way the kids ask about "more."

And tramp stamp? out of a child's mouth? Egad....

I had someone look in askance at my dragonflies the other day. It may not be the most demure thing about me, but since when is demure helpful anymore?

I'm glad you have a tattoo. Sorry for the reason, but glad you have it.

You don't have a tramp stamp? (I just learned that terminology--forgive me, I HAD to use it).

I have a tattoo on my hip. When I was 16, my best friend at the time picked me up with a 6 pack and made me get it b/c she thought I was too clean cut. The tattoo guy told me it's tribal. I have no idea what it is. Truly.

A young girl who works at a bar I've been seen in, got a tattoo over the week-end. Iasked her why, and she said I like stars, and the guy gve it to me for 1/2 price... I think tats are a personal choice, but it is nice to hear someone got one for a good reason!

What a nice tribute to your nephew!

My sister, niece and I have a tattoo on the back of our neck (white feather) as a tribute to our mother/grandmother who passed away at the age of 50. We got the tattoo on the 25th anniversary of her passing.
