We DO learn about Hieroglyphics in kindergarten..

Boys and girls, today at kindergarten show and tell we need to be very good listeners. Okay, Let’s get started.

Janie: This is my doll. She is my favorite and I sleep with her. I love her dress because it’s pink.

Caroline: This is my sister’s blanket. Don’t touch it though; it still has her boogers on it. (Notice the semi-colon people….are you impressed?)

Haley: This is my Barbie mermaid. I love her. I sleep with her. My mommy got her at Wal-mart.

Jack: This is my Bakogaon. It sticks to metal. I have a hundred of them at home. I got them at Wal-mart.

Jay-Han: This is my encyclopedia on Egyptology. It is extremely informative and it is my favorite thing to read. This photograph is of the Pyramids that are on the Nile River, the largest river in the world. The ancient Egyptians who constructed them used hieroglyphics to write on them. Also, if you were alive then you would NOT want to live in the pyramids, as they are extremely hot and uncomfortable. Any questions?

Silence.

Me: ....Well..... thank you Professor Kim! That was amazingly informative. Next?

This is why I can't wait for school to start.

Boy that Kindergarten curriculum is sure getting tough these days. :) And I would totally not want to live in a pyramid...I know that is true!

ChiTown Girl said...

Holy crap! Did you have my kid? He seriously had an encyclopedia on Egyptology when he was in Kdg., too! Freaky!

My son...who will offically be in the 1st grade on Wednesday, would like you to know that Jack's toy is actually spelled B-A-K-U-G-A-N.

I was reading this to him and he pointed out your error. lmao

At which point my child would reply, "Ruff-Ruff! Doggie has a question..."

Remember and love this one by the way!

I always cringed at what my child wanted to bring to show in tell for that very reason.

I want to be in kindergarten again! Show and tell was fun. My Niece brought ME to show and tell when she was in 2nd grade....I was a rodeo photographer then and she thought that was cool.

Thank God, I'm past all that school stuff. I would be a flunky for sure!! It is too hard. But I might make that wiz kid my "boyfriend" (back in the day). Sure way to pass the classes!!

Gotta know your resources!

Sharon Rose said...

Wow. . . get that kid's autograph now, even if his letters are backwards, which I doubt they will be. He's already so far ahead, you will be seeing him on TV in a few years and can say. . . I taught him "Algebra" in kindergarten!

How fun! I love those little guys!

Rick Daley said...

He's full of it. The aliens built them. You can't believe everything you read, doesn't he know that?

I sorta snorted when I read that; that last little guy reminded me of my older son at that age. :)

This would be fun to have a blogger show and tell, well I guess we sort of do that anyway...this was too funny. Frau sent me..

I'm betting we hear more from this one. Can you imagine what he'll be like in middle school?

Jay-Han has very little chance of peer acceptance. Help him find his way, would ya?

Any questions?

I brought this rock. I found it at the bus stop because my mom forgot it was show and tell day.

Treasures, indeed. I've wondered how teacher muster the energy for each year. Thanks for this insight.

I think the bigger issue is that every other child got their favorite toy at Wal-Mart.

Clearly, there is some low priced brain washing taking place here.

Kim said...

With kids like this in class, you can just sit back and let him teach, right?

Petra a.k.a The Wise (*Young*) Mommy said...

hahahaha, LOVE him.

Sprite's Keeper said...

Oh, sigh. I WAS that kid.
He's gonna have some tough years ahead of him. Memo to his parents: teach him blocking. SOON.

Christine said...

Mine is the kid who would pay careful attention about the ancient Egyptians and proceed to ask many questions.

Such as:

What designer did they wear? What kind of shoes were pictured on the wall? Did they do their own makeup? How did they accessorize ? Did they have fashion shows? In what style did they decorate their pyramids?

Kathy B! said...

Gotta love those kiddos. They sure cover the whole spectrum when they're so young!

Unknown said...

My 7yr old is always trying to tell people about the workings of the solar system, so I'm totally with you;) After he was disappointed on the first day of class, I tried to explain that most 2nd graders don't even know what a quasar is, let alone want to discuss it with him!

Sandee said...

Jay-Han is going places. Egypt perhaps. Bwahahahahahahahahaha. Thanks for the laughs.

Have a terrific day. Big hug. :)

Mango Girl said...

I was Jay-Han as a kid. I once took a 3 legged chair for show and tell. It was built with only 3 legs, in a pyramid shape. I thought it was the coolest thing in the world. Nobody else was excited. I am still disappointed.

Sue said...

Out of the mouths of babes! Thanks for sharing and making me laugh!

I just had a flash back to myself. :)

That's great in kindergarten, middle school... not so much.

SkylersDad said...

"Extremely informative"... God I love that, she will be appearing on Jeopardy someday.

Diane J. said...

LOL, that is just rich! Here's another laugh for you. I volunteer to sit with kids while they read to me. When the boys were in first grade I pulled out this girl to read and she had a cat book.
Girl: I like cats but we can't have one because my dad is allergic.

Me: Well you wouldn't want your dad sniffling all the time, you could visit a friend who has a cat.

Girl: (Forlorn)Yeah, I guess so.

Me: That's what I do when I want to play with dogs. My husband is not fond of dogs so I go visit my friend who has dogs.

Girl:You have friends?! I didn't know grown ups had friends...well, now I know!

Vodka Logic said...

Poor Jay-Han isn't going to have many friends starting out like that... but they best be nice as he will be their boss someday.

oh my. i think i've met this kid. i'm more of a "this is my blankie" kind of gal.

LegalMist said...

Wow, that Jay-Han is likely gifted in at least a couple of areas! How very cool.

justmakingourway said...

Whoa. Now that is a show and tell!

I used a semi-colon in my last post and thought of you. (Mostly hoping I'd used it correctly!!)

Unknown said...

I love the lesson and I think my son is rght on Jay-Han's heels. At two he is fascinated by dinosaurs and just the other day he said "I have an hypothesis" yup, no joke.

Beth said...

Hey, wait a minute! Since when did a kindergarten teacher need to know how to use a semi-colon?

Jeanne Estridge said...

My Kylie started kindergarten Monday. Mom called tonight she's come home with green ribbons (instead of the white ones that mean good behavior) both days so far.

That's my girl!

Ron said...

Okay, I'm not even going to comment on this because I had lunch with Mary Anne today. I'm special. (I told her to tell you hi for me.)

Every class has one of THESE kids. In my son's class, it was usually him! (Sometimes he scares me with his brain...)

Ann Imig said...

If you're really nice to her, maybe you can be her T.A. ;)

Congrats on the humorpress honor! YEAYYYY!

Ladybird World Mother said...

!!!! Had that once too... had a little girl with a lisp who got her dolly out and said... Thith ith my dolly...
Up got Joseph. With his encylopedia. And gave us a lecture. I was helpless with giggles and kept having to hide my face in the register. It was the total incomprehension on the other kid's faces. Fab.xx

Joanie said...

That last one would be mine. I had little Mr. and Miss Overshare. Granted, they're passionate about whatever they glom onto. But sometimes, they share way too much and other kids get jealous. On the other hand, the teachers love it if it's one of their "lost" days.

I miss teaching more and more. I even miss the poop-pellet trails and the who-dunnit follow-up game.

Awesome.
The classrooms of the world should be full of kids like this.

I have a feeling he doesn't play with the other kids and little Doogie should probably head straight to doctorate school. :-)

You have to laugh....

My mom used to say that you get one of those in every class.

Show and Tell is great! I bet you learn a ton about the kids through that little fun activity. Is Professor Kim an only child by any chance--my guess is yes, or at least the oldest. She may need some help learning social skills--seems she has the intellectual part down. I think maybe Professor Kim should start a blog.

I love to read about teacher's experiences.

Congrats on your SITS day!

Unknown said...

I loved having students like this.

Wow. They should come up with a game show called...yeah...you guessed it:
"Are you smarter than a kindergartner?"
His parents must be so proud. In fact, I think I know his parents! I guarantee you when he is valedictorian, he will spend 33 1/2 minutes telling everyone how inspiring they are; before being whisked off to Harvard.

Louise | Italy said...

This would be my kindergartner son's version : this is my favourite book. It's all about knights. They ride on horses and kill each other. They have competitions called jousts. Afterwards they have to go to the toilet in a castle tower, and it all falls into the moat, see. SEE! You're not looking! LOOK AT THE CA-CA!

That so balances out the mermaid crowd.

Amazing how much kids can know and early they show their smarts :-)
But then again, I sometimes I think that kids like that lose some of their childhood.

Happy SITS day!!! Yep, my four year old is just like that...um, it's not easy...She can get really upset if you get a crocodile mixed up with an alligator...cuz as she says "Mom, I'm four. And I know the difference. Shouldn't you?"

Heather said...

I think it's amazing the things that kids will find a fascination with. My boyfriend's niece loves Egypt too.

Stopping by from SITS.

Love the encyclopedia kids. I've got two and how they luuuuv to show me up when it comes to knowing stuff.

Wow, I still don't know that much about pyramids and I have been out of school a long time, lol. My favorite was booger blanket girl though :)

Kearsie said...

I've got a Kingergartener at home. Lemme just tell you, stuff like that happens.

The Italian Mama said...

Point proven...kids take in everything. So if they absorb the boring stuff, imagine what they do with the juicier things they hear :)

Unknown said...

That's pretty much the best story I've read today! (it's the first of yours I've read though, so we'll see...)

That kid sounds awesome, by the way. I want to know more about the pyramid stuff!

Bea said...

Kids are definitely sponges! The only problem is when they take the "Miracle of Life" (with explicit pictures of a birth) to their first grade class show and tell. Yeah. . . teacher did NOT appreciate my son sharing that with everyone.

Kris said...

Happy SITS day! I've been following you for a while but it was great to see you finally got your day!

BTW - I have a 4 year old. She's already smarter than me!

Mammatalk said...

My daughter is like the pyramid kid. She scares me every day. Hard to parent a kid smarter than you.

Sounds like one of my students. I love it! Happy SITS Day!

Isn't it amazing how in one class of 20 kids you can have such opposite sides of the spectrum? I'm amazed by what happens in one day with my first grade class every-single-day!

Claudya Martinez said...

I want to know if his book has boogers on it.

Unknown said...

That is so funny! I used to talk about how weird (funny) my dad was for show and tell. He was a big goofball :) ~ Stoppin by from SITS

I have a 3rd grade student like that... except all of his info is about vacuum cleaners and sump pumps. Always great for a good laugh!

MommyToTwoBoys said...

Once again, you make me miss the classroom. I am reminded of a boy I once had who answered "I feel like I am drowning in a river of peanut butter" whenever I asked him how he felt. Ooookkkkk, not sure how he knows what that feels like, but...
