The girl who cried wolf. (Unfortunately, she's someone ELSE'S daughter.)

My darling Bitchy,

Ahem. Well.... First, let me just say that's I'm pretty sure it's been confirmed that having children destroys most of your brain cells.

(This is your brain on children.)

I know you've been complaining to me for at least five months now that you're EXHAUSTED all the time and can barely function. And yes, I told you it was probably because you were working THREE jobs since last spring and running 4.5 miles a day all the while determined to maintain an active social life. I reminded you to eat REAL food (and no, coffee and fiber one bars don't count) get some sleep and take your vitamins.

I finally relented last week and made a doctors appointment in order to prove to you that you needed more iron. (I was also hoping the daily "complaining" phone calls and texts might end.) They had you come in and do some blood work, and I was hoping they would give you tiny iron pills and send you on your way.

Apparently I was wrong.

When you called me last night to tell me the doctor's office called and said you had something wrong with your thyroid, and that we needed to come in asap to talk about it - you rendered me speechless.

I'd like to add this to the ever growing list of "Things I've @)#($&# up since becoming a mother."

I applaud you for listening to your BODY and not your MOTHER.

Now, can I get you some ice cream? Some filet mignon? A billion dollar necklace????

No?

Okay, I'll just sit here eating some humble pie and google all thing thyroidical.

(You're never too old to learn a lesson....)

Don't be hard on yourself. Motherhood is a hard job and sometimes you get it right, and other times, nope.

But as long as you're always there when your kids need you, all is good.

And it's nice that you apologize to your kids. :)

That is the worst. Sorry she is dealing with that. We have many members of my family that have the same issue.

Also? How is that pie?

have that pie - a la mode. It'll go down easier.

I've had a thyroid "thing" since I was probably around Bitchy's age, and a little bit of meds everyday helps. I hope that's all she'll need!
Don't beat yourself up, since all of the other stuff that you mention certainly didn't help the situation!

i am glad they are being cared for...my wife had to have thyroid surgery the week before our wedding...

I understand, my son had cancer and I didn't think it was anything more serious than a slight infection. I almost fell over when my husband called to tell me it was CANCER!
You and I are both great moms, but we aren't doctors.
And all the things you told her are true...
Wash pie down with vodka!

We all have this happen along the way. I had the same thing happen as MaryBeth...

My daughter had a cough all through a Christmas break. It went away and then came back a few weeks later. Turned out it was not Bronchitis, as we had thought but Hodgkins Lymphoma. Luckily, the cancer was caught early and taken care of right away. The brat is healthy and 7 years past treatment.

We do only what we can and then hope for the best. You did that and advised as well as you could.

You should have filet mignon, ice cream with all the toppings, a vodka enhanced beverage... and what the hell, buy yourself a necklace. We all need to feel better! =]

Yes, we screw it up in Motherhood--and they turn out fine in spite of us. I'll be thinking of her this week--and you, too!

I, umh, listened as my daughter told me she fell and hit her head TWICE while snowboarding......it wasn't until three days later, when her roommate (a nursing student) said she might have a concussion...that I thought "oh yeah". She had a double concussion! And I have seven kids, so it's not like I don't know about stuff. You know, stuff, like fainting and bleeding and surgeries and etc etc!! I was just - out there - on this one.

Man! I hate being wrong about things like that...takes away the force of our credentials. Just for a little while though, so don't be too hard on yourself.

So sorry she's dealing with this. Don't beat yourself up about it, but do buy her the necklace!

Oh, damn, I'm sorry for you and for Bitchy. Guilt is a useless emotion. Completely and totally counter-productive. A short shopping spree should do the trick.

Cheers,

Casey

P.S. - My daughter is a runner as well and I have no idea where she gets it.

This reminds me of when my co-worker thought his 6 month old was having a hard time teething and finally took her to the doctor and they said it was an ear infection. He said, "no wonder the baby orajel didn't work".

Take it easy, and be thankful that she took the initiative to go.

Poor girl...I really hope they are able to find a medicine that works with her body chemistry and get everything squared away!

Wait, you mean we don't stop screwing them up? I thought I'd get the hang of this at some point.

Same sort of thing happening here .. although mine is older than Bitchy and probably wiser than her mom.
Try not to worry ( I know, that is the same as saying try not to breathe) but there are pretty much meds for Everything and it is shocking how many people have thyroid issues !
much love and good luck !!

Been there. Done that. When one of my son was in middle school I had to leave work several times one week to pick him up because hs had a stomach ache. This son was not a stellar student and was always trying to get out of school. The last time I picked him up I yelled at him and dropped him off at home and went back to work. I started feeling guilty so I called the doctor and made an appointment. He had his appendix out later that evening. I'll never live that down. All tuned out well with him He did graduate high school, joined the Army and was a ranger for six years. He is out of the Army and married and in college.

Oh, shit. And shit happens. And I'm glad they caught it. My fourth baby had an ear infection for a month. No fever. Who knew?

You can't be too hard on yourself for thinking it was because she was running herself too hard. If you're anything like me, you've rushed her to the doctor many times in the past only to be told, "it's nothing." We learn something new every day... even when they're "grown up."

You've got to hand it to her - She knows her body. And you can't have been a bad mom, because someone had to teach her to trust herself!

Omigosh. I can so relate. I remember so many times taking my first baby to the pediatrician and feeling like a fool b/c she said it was a cold virus each time. Then one time I didn't take our daughter right away to the doc (seemed like the previous colds to me) and when I did take her, the pediatrician said we need chest x-rays, I hear wheezing. I couldn't tell the difference. Baby girl ended up fine but I wish I could have been a pediatrician; however, I got a C in Chem 101. God bless you for raising children that have learned to listen to their bodies. You are a wonderful mother and writer. Thank you!
