9/8/10

He can multiply, divide, speak Spanish, discuss square roots and perform magic.

I have a little boy in my room this year who is gifted and talented.

I was given a heads-up by several different people who shared that John was not only an amazing reader, but he was very advanced in math.

Many times I smile when I hear these things, because more often than not the Asian children who usually appear in my room are heads above the other children- but they never seem to have an “advance team” informing their teacher of their supernatural powers. (And somehow, miracle of miracles, I usually figure out what they need to succeed.)

As the days progressed, I have noticed that John WAS indeed an amazing reader, and his problem solving skills are equally amazing. However, it was THIS conversation about our Hopes and Dreams for the year that confirmed his place in my heart.

Boys and Girls, now we are going to talk about our OWN Hopes and Dreams for this year; what do YOU want to learn this year? What is your HOPE for the year?

Susie: I hope I learn to read!

Janie: I HOPE to learn to read, too!

Jack: I hope I learn to swim! With NO floaties!

Trixie: I want to learn to do math. Really hard math!

And then I finally heard from my gifted and talented John:

“You know what? I want to learn how to shoot lightening bolts out of my hands! That’s what I really want to do.”

And that made my day. Yeah, he’s gifted and talented, but you know what?

He’s also a real, live boy.

I think he's a demi-God. Is his middle name Zeus? A real little boy would have also mentioned a booger or fart or something.

That's great and reasonable. I think a lot of people (me included) would like to learn that.

I want that superpower too. Smart kid to think of it.

Let me know if he figures out how to do that. It might be a skill I would need some day.

I'll bet his advance team will be downhearted when they learn he's just a little boy after all. Shazam!

BTW, the image of those Brad Glove Buckle Flats is so wrong in so many ways.

Step 1: Take off your shoes and socks.

Step 2: Put on wool socks.

Step 3: Scuffle around on the carpeting for a bit.

Step 4: Touch Susie on the tip of her nose.

Step 5: Laugh as Susie jumps as a spark leaps from your finger to her nose.

Glad I could be of help.

Good to know he cans till think like a 5 year old.

If he figures out that lightning bolt thing, he could come in handy during a power outage!

Just regular kids AMEN! I can't tell you how many parents who approached me at open house last week to tell me how brilliant their child was or concerned they would be bored because they were so advanced. It is a class of 2/3 year olds...ARE YA KIDDING ME? They will play, sing, laugh, cry and learn how to play with others.

lol, wonderful !
I remember when my little boy was so sure he , too, could leap off tall buildings and fly.
We had to be sure to live in only low rise apartments.

Love it! Shows that no matter how much of a genius he is, he's still a little boy who wants to dream.

I will carry that smile with me all day ;)

I was convinced that I would still be able to fly until about the third grade, regardless of this little thing called gravity.

My 7 year old reckons he can do that - when we're all asleep of course. Let me know if he needs lessons.

Gah, I love it! I often miss the stuff that kids say, especially the silly things! I can't wait for The Boy to say stuff like that!

Not a day goes by that I don't wish I could do that. And fly. And if I could fly AND shoot lightning bolts out of my hands? Man, I would be unstoppable...

Can't help but think....suppose he is REALLY gifted and is the one to actually figure out a way to make an electrical charge shoot out of his fingers?? I'd keep an eye on this one!!

Ten bucks says he learns how to shoot lightening bolts out of his hands before the end of the school year!

I love it! Last year I had a whole class of g/t kids and was disappointed with their lack of imagination. Even their art work lacked imagination because they would all do the same thing. This year, I have two very gifted and talented kids in my class and I am so happy to see that they also have very active imaginations! I am planning having them use their imagination a LOT this year! I'm also teaching them the word "individuality." :)

Gigi said...

That was totally priceless! Once he masters that can you have him teach me how to do it? It would be an awesome to be able to shoot lighting bolts when I say to Man-Child, "I SAID to clean your room!"

Do you teach that? 'Cause if you do, you're an even better teacher then I thought!

I love this post! You are an amazing teacher. I wish my son could somehow have you. As a former teacher and mom of a gifted and talented, yet Autistic, real, live boy this story hits home. Love it!

Crys said...

I love it! Tell him to teach me once he's figured out how. I'd love to be able to zap someone. :)

Don't think I told you this already, but at Katie's orientation last week, all the kids were asked what they most looked forward in kindergarten...my budding genius: "Playing with all the cool toys."
