10/21/10

He's a rookie. He's GOOD, I'l give him that, but a rookie nonetheless.

Today on the way to lunch Frank was telling all the children that he had a gun.

I heard him clear as a bell.

As the kindergartners began to get their trays, I walked to the end of the line to have a little chat with our friend. (Unfortunately, he has earned the permanent job of “caboose.”) I think he knew what was coming.

“I am five years old and I DO have a gun. A real one!” he said in his loud, gravelly voice.

I leaned in as close as I could, but my hands on his shoulders and said, “Well, I’m …..older than that….. and I have a cell phone and I am calling the POLICE, if I ever, ever, ever, ever hear you say that again. Do. You. Understand?”

He nodded.

That’s the first time I’ve rendered HIM speechless in 36 days.

You know what I got as he ran out the door for the bus? A hug and a smile and a PROMISE that he was coming back tomorrow.

I guess even in kindergarten you have to take that stuff kind of seriously nowadays.

When high school kids say that, we just lock them in the Principal's office until the police get there.

Yeah..do you know what he's coming back with tomorrow? I'd call in sick!

36 days...doesn't it seem like more?

The kid was definitely screaming for some boundaries...glad you could oblige.

scary though, huh?

You are the best teacher EVER!

Glad you gave the little guy some tough love - he sounds like a handful!

I'm just as happy that's as serious as you did take it. I know some places where just saying that - kidding or not - would get him expelled, even as a kindergartner.

I can just picture that.
At my school, that comment would probably receive the same response.

yeah, at my school he would have been suspended for 3 days. Even for just mentioning he had one.

Oh Frank, my boy, you have a lot to learn. Thank goodness you've got a great teacher to set you straight.

Ok, I am crying! I heard things like that for over 18 years. K-8, boys and girls. They try to shock everyone. The problem is the stories have to get bigger and badder in order to shock... Kids have become unshockable. Society has become unshockable.

That sounds like a nice breakthrough to me.

Well played oh teacher of young ones. Hopefully if there is a gun in existence at home, it is locked safely out of Frank's reach.

Frank sounds just like Dirty Ernie or Buster Bad Ass from the old jokes!!

You go, teacher! Perfect timing!

Yes, you will have much to blog about during the school year!

Thanks for sharing!

Hopefully by "real gun," he means an arm muscle.

And by guns he means his muscles right?

I can see how Frank can be all-consuming! Are there more like him at home just waiting for there turn in Kindergarten? Good luck!

I was going to say he needs some straightening out and you did it well! Scared Straight Kindergarten version!
Frank seems like he craves some attention. I wonder what his home life is like. I'm glad he is returning.

That reminded me of that kid who was expelled from school for bringing a plastic toy gun to school. What a mess! I hope that Frank got straightened out! I'd hate to see a kiddo who obviously was looking for attention get punished for it. Luckily he has a fabulous teacher like you :)
