Security Check (aka How to Amuse your Neighbors...)

Sure fire way to test the locks on all your doors and windows if you are on pins and needles after discovering a stalker?

Lock you and your two teenage girls outside of the house with their Starbucks drinks and ALL your keys inside the house.

Me: “I am CALLING 911!!! RIGHT NOW!!”

The girls (calmly) “Stop it MOTHER, we’ll get in.”

Time it takes for two teenage girls and one hysterical fifty-year-old woman to break into their own house?

4.5 minutes.

Oh, and let’s not forget to always checks the sliding door on the deck. Apparently it opens easily from the outside with a debit card.

Nice. If only this was captured on video...

I'm guessing your sliding door is about to get a lock overhaul!

Those girls find all sorts of ways to use our debit cards, now don't they????

Good thing you had your Starbucks with you.

SO sorry for the creepy dude in your life right now. Hope the police can put a stop to this soon.

I'm always amazed at how easily teenagers can break in. Skills of the absent minded. Mine were always forgetting their keys.

Ah, the debit card - just as likely to get you into a jam as outta one. :)

Would they have been as successful
without the Starbucks :)

Fix that security weakness!!

Forgot to tell you
put a broom handle in the track of the slider...

New England deadbolt :)

We have a stick in our sliding glass door - just like Rene. I always thought it was a Southern thing.

Glad you got back in the house!

Those sliding doors, they always get you. I don't want to know how easy it is to get into our house. I'd never sleep again.

Brian Miller said...

lol. i could teach you a few tricks about breaking and entering...err...i must have read it somewhere...

and we have a stick in our door too, because of that...

I used to sneak out of our house at night and I just told my mother recently and she almost had a heart attack. She asked me how I did it and I said, "I opened the door and walked out."

Fucking DUH.

Kind of scary to think it only took 4.5 minutes for amatuers to get into the house.....couldn't you invite the police over to check the house out? I bet, since you've notified them of the problem they have some kind of service that checks out the security of your house.....just thinkin'.......

Once when we were locked out, I called my neighbor and she had to show me how to break into my own house with her credit card.

Ahh, the great feeling of a false sense of security.

I know you have a serious message here but the way you write it is so funny..

Liz Mays said...

Oh geez, put in one of those safety bars. This isn't good at all.

However, thinking of the three of you out there dealing with the situation is hilarious fun for me.

VodkaMom, keep checking the whole house so you can correct any vulnerabilities. Even without the stalker situation. It's a good preventatitive. Also observe the house after dark tith all the lights on inside, so you can see what others see. Keep safe!

I'm not sure if you should be frightened or proud that they knew how to open that door...

Meg said...

When we were locked out, my teen merely opened the kitchen window and crawled through. I guess there's locks on windows for a reason.

Sorry to hear about the stalker. Hopefully he'll heed your warning.

Stick in the track here, too.

Broomstick cut to fit in the door. AND big dog and outside lights on motion detectors. I'm sending good secure thoughts your way.

This makes me wonder how safe our house really is.

That scenario, repeated oft times at our home, caused us to finally install a keypad for entry into the house. It's great! So now no one, except hubby, carries keys. In case of power outage, though, we're screwed.

Angie said...

Have you put in a broomstick yet? We have a bar that was actually screwed into the door frame...it just lifts up when we want to open it. Broomsticks work over windows, too. Good luck. :)

Even though the ease of how quickly you got into the house might be freaking you out? Three cheers for ingenuity!

HoodChick said...

This is why I have steel doors, a big ass dog, AND a taser...

Crazy Charm said...

I can just picture you busting out your gymnast moves to break in!

Vodka Mom said...

I put the broomstick in the door!!!

Deidre said...

Hah! I guess you don't have to worry about getting locked out any more! :)

And about your post below - Have you tried step up 2 the streets as a guilty pleasure movie? because yo, it be awesome.

A debit card?

I'll have to keep that in mind if Natalie locks me out again...

Erika Jean said...

we put stick/bar on the inside track of the sliding door so it can't be opened when we are gone!

Roshni said...

is that how the girls slip in if they miss their curfew deadline?!

http://howtobecomeacatladywithoutthecats.blogspot.com said...

Well done! Well done! I'd lay money down on the average person being able to break into their own house in under 5 minutes!

Anonymous said...

i knew it opened easily with something- that's why I have the massive poles blocking its opening...how the hell did you do that?

Formerly known as Frau said...

Put a broom stick in the slider door.

Irish Gumbo said...

You didn't know about the debit card trick? Wow. I mean. Not that i knew, just sayin'...

The reason the "amateurs" could get in so fast, is that they have a vested interest in being able to do so, quickly and sneakily.

At least, that's what the other kids told me (grin)

Melissa Haak said...

I have done it, at least y our girls are grown, I had a newborn and a two old, who kept asking me why we can't go inside!
